This is my new set of nails, and they're my Halloween nails. I picked the design to get me through October, and also because on October 31st I'm going to a Halloween party. Hence the blood-colored polish and the little drops of blood running down.
Estas son mis uñas nuevas, y son mis uñas de Halloween. Escogí el diseño para pasar todo octubre, y también porque el 31 voy a una fiesta de Halloween. De ahí los colores como de sangre y las goticas corriendo.
In Cuba Halloween isn't really a thing. There are parties, sure, but nobody decorates the house or goes around doing trick or treat for candy like in the United States. The same goes for Thanksgiving, and Christmas doesn't look like the movies either. Then again, culture leaks. You have social media, you see everybody else joining the trend, and you want in too, so here I am.
En Cuba Halloween no es una tradición. Hay fiestas, claro, pero nadie decora la casa ni sale a pedir dulces como en Estados Unidos. Con Acción de Gracias pasa igual, y la Navidad tampoco se vive como en las películas. Pero la cultura se filtra. Tienes redes sociales, ves a todo el mundo en la tendencia y quieres participar, así que aquí estoy.
I still don't know if I'll manage a full costume. We're trying, nothing is decided. At least the costume is already on my fingers.

Here's the before. The process is the same as always. I get cleaned up, she removes the old polish, goes at them with the drill, takes care of the cuticles, then primer and base. After that comes black polish, then a silver cat eye on top of the black, and over everything a translucent red I couldn't tell you the name of. The effect is black and silver showing through underneath the red, which is the part I like most.
Aquí está el antes. El proceso es el mismo de siempre. Llego, me limpian, me quitan la pintura vieja, me dan con la máquina, me quitan las cutículas y siguen el primer y la base. Después va la pintura negra, encima un ojo de gato plateado, y por encima de todo un rojo traslúcido que no sé cómo se llama. El efecto es que el negro y el plateado se ven por debajo del rojo, y esa es la parte que más me gusta.
Then came the blood drops, and I have to be honest, I didn't love them. The reference I took was done with builder gel, so the drops looked 3D, like they were about to fall off the nail. My manicurist had no clear gel and no red gel, so she couldn't do them that way and did what she could with what she had. They're fine. I just kept thinking about the picture on my phone.
Después vinieron las goticas de sangre, y tengo que ser sincera, no me encantaron. La referencia que llevé estaba hecha con gel de construcción, y las gotas quedaban en 3D, como a punto de caerse de la uña. Mi manicura no tenía gel transparente ni gel rojo, así que no pudo hacerlas así y hizo lo que se pudo con lo que había. Están bien. Es que yo me quedé pensando en la foto del teléfono.
They cost 1,300 Cuban pesos, the same as every other time, which is around 1.80 HBD at today's rate. If someone at the party asks what I'm dressed as, I'll just show them my hands.
