Today is Thursday, so it's TBT time. I don't have the exact date for this outing. It was during school vacation, before 2019, and my bet is 2017, though it could have been 2018. The date got lost along the way, the photos didn't.

Fuimos mi mamá, mi primita Nailet, mi vecinita Arazay y yo.

It was my mom, my little cousin Nailet, my neighbor's little girl Arazay and me. It all started when my mom said, "come on, let's take the girls to Coney Island." That's still what all of us call the Isla del Coco amusement park, on Quinta Avenida in Miramar, even though its official name has been different for years. The original Coney Island opened in 1918, copied from the one in Brooklyn, and long after that the Isla del Coco was built on the same grounds, with Chinese rides and characters from Cuban comics, like Captain Plin, waiting at the entrance. The girls took photos with every single one, of course.

To get there we took a bus to La Virgen and then a P1. Today that sounds like an expedition, but back then it was just how you went to the park. And we stayed there for a long while. I rode the flying elephant with the girls, waving at the camera like I was famous. On the tower with the bug-eyed creatures they screamed as much as they wanted, and I climbed into the giant teacup with the strawberry on top, hands gripping the rim and a mom smile that didn't last past two spins. Then we went for ice cream and came back the same way, by bus, tired and happy.

If you walk past the park today, you start thinking Chernobyl was better maintained. The rides are on the ground, with grass growing through them, destroyed. And that afternoon wasn't even a perfect park, but it worked and it was enough for us. Repeating that outing today is impossible for several reasons and all of them weigh. There are no buses, the park doesn't exist as a park anymore, and I doubt they still sell ice cream at the place where we bought it. Kids in Cuba used to have those options, a day at the park with ice cream included, and now they don't. Nailet and Arazay grew up with the photos and not much else.

No sé si la heladería sigue abierta. Tampoco tengo muchas ganas de ir a comprobarlo.

I don't know if the ice cream place is still open. I don't really feel like going to find out either.
