Just finished this small study for a larger version I will be starting as soon as the customer gives feedback on the study. It is of a view from the resort hotel overlooking the golf course and distant mountains at sunset.

I started with a canvas toned to a reddish orange and marked a grid that would aid in drawing the scene. I don’t always do this but since this scene had tee boxes, fairways, rough, cart paths and trees and mountains, I wanted to ensure the scene was laid out correctly.

I also drew the grid on the digital rendering that I had printed out. You can see I also outlined the large shapes that will help me in drawing the scene.

After I finished drawing in the big shapes, I blocked them in with colors that would act as background as I added details later in the process.

Then finally I added details such as the foreground and mid ground grasses, the layers of distant mountains, and added more detail to the sky.

I am not a fast painter so it took me about four hours for the little 11”x14” scene. Doing a small version will be very helpful when I do it again on a large canvas. I hope you like it.
