Crypto's favorite contrarian is back at it. Arthur Hayes, the outspoken former BitMEX chief known for moving markets with a single tweet, has just revealed a fresh $2 million bet on SYN, the native token of Synapse — a project quietly reinventing itself at the heart of the Hyperliquid ecosystem.
The move comes weeks after Hayes dumped his HYPE and NEAR holdings in early June, a decision that left plenty of investors scratching their heads given his prior enthusiasm for both. Now he's circling back, this time targeting a smaller, lesser-known name riding one of the most explosive rallies in recent memory.
Synapse didn't start out as a derivatives play. Originally built around cross-chain messaging infrastructure, the protocol pivoted late last year toward on-chain options trading, launching Hypercall — a HyperEVM-based options exchange currently offering contracts on SPCX and the S&P 500, with broader crypto markets reportedly on the roadmap.
Hayes frames the investment as an asymmetric bet: a way to stay long on Hyperliquid's broader ecosystem without holding HYPE itself, betting that an underappreciated infrastructure piece could capture outsized upside.
What's turning heads isn't just the bet — it's the timing. SYN has already surged more than 800% over the past month, and Hayes only confirmed his position publicly after the trade had executed. Critics on social media have been quick to label it a textbook case of "exit liquidity," especially given his track record of rapid strategy reversals.
Still, with a market cap hovering around $95 million, SYN remains a relatively small player, leaving room for further upside if the narrative holds. The bigger question is whether Hypercall can actually compete: rivals like Derive and Rysk Finance already command stronger recognition and liquidity in the on-chain options space.
Whether this is genuine conviction or another headline-grabbing maneuver, one thing is certain — when Arthur Hayes moves, the market watches closely.
