In the rapidly evolving world of decentralized finance (DeFi), anomalies often signal either hidden opportunities or overlooked structural realities. One such anomaly is unfolding on Hyperliquid with Kinetiq (kinetiq.xyz) the largest liquid staking protocol natively built on the chain. Despite commanding an astonishing $1 billion in deposits and holding roughly 83% of the liquid staking market share, Kinetiq’s token sits at a modest $31M–$35M market cap. This disconnect between dominance and valuation raises a critical question: Is Kinetiq drastically underrated, or is there a deeper tokenomics reason behind the gap?
To understand the anomaly, we must first appreciate what Kinetiq has built:
StakeHub’s Auto-Delegation
Traditional staking requires users to manually select validators, often leading to inefficiencies or concentration risks. Kinetiq’s StakeHub automates this process, delegating HYPE deposits to top-performing validators. This ensures optimal yield distribution while reducing friction for users.
kHYPE: Capital Efficiency Unlocked
When users stake HYPE, they receive kHYPE, a liquid staking derivative that retains full DeFi utility. Unlike locked staking positions, kHYPE can be traded, lent, or used in liquidity pools maximizing capital efficiency across the Hyperliquid ecosystem.
Launch: Crowdfunding New Markets
Beyond staking, Kinetiq powers innovation through Launch, a tool that allows communities to crowdfund HYPE stakes to bootstrap new markets. This transforms staking from a passive yield activity into a catalyst for ecosystem growth.
Together, these innovations position Kinetiq not just as a staking protocol, but as a foundational layer for Hyperliquid’s DeFi economy.
Despite its dominance, Kinetiq’s token valuation lags far behind its total value locked (TVL). Several factors may explain this:
Token Utility vs. Protocol Utility
Much of Kinetiq’s value accrues to users of kHYPE rather than holders of the native token. If the token does not capture fees, governance power, or yield in proportion to TVL, the market may discount its value.
Liquidity Derivative Dynamics
Liquid staking derivatives often overshadow the protocol token itself. For example, users prioritize holding kHYPE (which has direct DeFi utility) over the governance token, reducing demand for the latter.
Market Awareness & Narrative Lag
Hyperliquid is still a relatively new ecosystem compared to Ethereum or Solana. Investors may not yet fully appreciate the scale of Kinetiq’s dominance, leading to undervaluation until narratives catch up.
Structural Tokenomics
If Kinetiq’s tokenomics are designed with limited supply sinks (e.g., no mandatory staking of the governance token, no fee redistribution), then the token may structurally lag behind TVL growth. This is not necessarily a flaw, it may simply reflect a design choice prioritizing ecosystem utility over speculative value.
From an outside view, the gap looks striking. A protocol with 83% market share and $1B in deposits would, in most ecosystems, command a market cap several times higher. Yet, if the token is not designed to capture that value directly, the market may be rational in pricing it lower.
That said, undervaluation often persists until catalysts emerge:
I haven’t personally staked HYPE or farmed kPoints, but objectively, the appeal is clear: automated validator delegation, liquid staking flexibility, and the ability to use kHYPE across DeFi make Kinetiq a compelling choice. If I were to stake, the deciding factor would be capital efficiency, the ability to earn yield while still deploying assets elsewhere. That’s the killer feature.
The valuation gap, then, is less about whether Kinetiq is “underrated” and more about whether its tokenomics are designed to capture value. If future updates align token incentives more closely with protocol dominance, the market cap could re-rate dramatically. Until then, Kinetiq remains a fascinating case study in how DeFi protocols can dominate in utility while their tokens lag in valuation.
The Kinetiq anomaly is a reminder that in DeFi, TVL does not automatically equal token value. Investors must look deeper into tokenomics, utility, and narrative adoption. Whether this gap closes depends not just on Kinetiq’s dominance, but on how effectively its token is woven into the fabric of Hyperliquid’s future.
