When I first jumped into battles, I kept building awkward lineups and my win rate showed it... oof. I wasn’t really reading what the cards were trying to tell me. Once I slowed down and learned the attributes on the card face, everything clicked. My lineups got cleaner, my choices got faster, and my results… way better. Here’s the quick tour I wish I had on Day 1.
created using Sora
Top-left: Mana cost.
Higher mana can mean beefier stats, but it’s not automatically “stronger.” If the ruleset gives you a low mana cap, a 9-mana monster is dead weight. Build to the cap, not the ego. 😅
Left edge: Attack type + attack power.
You’ll see whether the monster is Melee, Ranged, or Magic, and the number beside it is how hard it hits. That number often starts at 1–2 at lower levels and scales with upgrades. Match attack types to the job:
Top-right: Splinter (element).
Earth, Water, Fire, Life, Death, Dragon, Neutral... this icon matters for rulesets and summoner synergies. If your summoner buffs Earth units and you bring a Water backline… you just failed to utilize the advantage brought by the summoner.
Right edge: Speed, Armor, Health.
Under the name: Level bar.
A quick “how grown is this monster?” meter. Higher level unlocks better stats and sometimes extra abilities. Even a single level can flip a matchup.
Bottom strip: Abilities.
This is the fun stuff—Sneak, Snipe, Opportunity, Heal, Thorns, Dodge, Double Strike, Life Leech, etc. If there’s a ruleset disabling or muting abilities, check thoroughly the monster's abilities before adding them to the line up.
Start at the cap: I check mana first. Low cap? I favor cheap utility (2–4 mana cards with impact abilities). High cap? I can afford a proper tank + carry core.
Choose my tank by stats: Look at Armor/Health/Speed together. Slow, fat tanks are fine when I expect to eat damages; faster fronts are clutch vs. dodge races.
Pick damage by role:
Layer abilities to a plan: Sneak to shred the back, Snipe to delete their support, Opportunity to clean the lowest HP. Don’t mix three plans... pick one win condition.
Positioning check: Keep Ranged off Position 1, protect magic monsters, place Reach in slot 2, and shield the most important piece from Sneak/Snipe routes.
Summoner synergy: Make sure the team actually benefits from your summoner’s buff. If not, switch the summoner or the team.
Since I started reading cards this way, my teams feel intentional instead of random... and my win rate followed. If you’re in the “why am I losing with good cards?” stage, don’t rush to buy more; squeeze more out of what you have by reading every attribute and building to a clear plan.
What part of the card do you check first... mana, abilities, or speed? Drop your answers; I’m still learning every day. 🐉💚
