This is a very short and surprisingly true story about political correctness gone berserk at work.

The Banal "Problem"

Yeas ago, I was working at a company with a long history of aircraft manufacturing. In effort to create additional revenue streams, the company decided to digitize and sell historic archived images. To improve visibility and enthusiasm for the effort, images were printed and hung on the office walls. One such image made its way into my work space.

The original image (to which I do not own the copyright and therefore will link HERE rather than post) is of a shirtless man who is painting an aircraft. (Scroll down on page to see it). The image originated in around 1937.

One day, our bigwig boss flew in for a visit He came into our work space and immediately noticed the picture hanging on the wall. Much to our surprise, he suggested that the image might not be appropriate for the office because the man was not wearing a shirt. He wanted us to take it down.

Really?

A historic image, which is essentially a work of art at this point is not appropriate for the office because the male worker is not wearing a shirt? At what point did we turn into Quakers?

The MacGruber Solution

After we stopped laughing about this, my co-worker and I decided that we would not be removing the image. Instead, we cut out a paper blouse from an online woman's clothing retailer and taped it to the glass. Problem solved. They're lucky we did not put him in a dress or lacy negligee.

The picture hung there on the wall for three more years with a paper blouse taped to it until we moved offices. Then, it disappeared.

I'm glad I snapped a picture of it.

What do you think? Should we have simply take the picture down and behaved ourselves? Obviously I could not do that.
