Today was our second day in Japan. Originally, we planned to stay in Osaka, but we decided Nara sounded fun. We got up a little late and skipped breakfast. Off to Nara!
When we started walking around Nara, there was so many amazing snacks. So we got some green tea mochi. This store has mochi with different levels of tea. So depending on your personalized taste for green tea.
Then we got some chest nuts or water chest nuts. I’m not too sure.
Then we walked around Nara and visited some temples and historic sights.
We got lunch in a small restaurant in the park. We wanted to go to the one below, but they were closed.
That building was really cool looking. Ours was a modern building, but served almost the same.
We basically ordered from two dishes. One was hot noodle soup with egg.
And cold udon noodles that you dip in a soy sauce with horse radish and chili. I got the cold udon. Both were delicious.
For dessert, some of us ordered the below rice cake served in a sweet red bean soup.
While others enjoyed the one before which is hard to explain.
The above is a type of mochi (made of rice) but it’s has a gooey consistency. It’s hot and served in a soup with ice. The ice makes the outside harder, while the hot inside is gooyer -hope that makes sense. It’s served with sweet red beans and soy bean powder.
On the way back, my son got an interesting drink. You peel back the lid and add a powder. The powder causes foaming. The drink is a sweet sugar drink with gelatin squares inside.
As cool as it sounds, the foam has a vinegar taste and the drink was very sweet. Not recommended.
When we got back to Osaka, we separated and took an hour to look at shops that we were interested in.
Unfortunately, our WiFi device (that we rented at the airport in Taiwan) died. And my sons and i had trouble finding the others. Eventually, we did, but they already ate.
So, my sons ordered the meat sauce pasta.
And i ordered the carbonara.
Here are some amazing displays that we saw. If you have never been to Asia, these are very common to show what the food looks like. It really helps when you can’t read or understand the language. It should be at art form or maybe it is.
Remember, that’s not real good.
