El es una persona que desde muy niño amaba al Borussia Dortmund, de hecho el inicio su carrera en las inferiores de este club con la ilusión de poder llegar al primer equipo, sueño que se vio un poco frustrado ya que fue el mismo club que freno su progreso debido a su delgada contextura física, por lo que se vio obligado a salir para continuar con su carrera, se fue al Rot Weiss Ahlen equipo con el que llego a disputar hasta la Bundesliga 2, luego ficha por el Borussia Mönchengladbach, y debido a sus muy buenas actuaciones en el 2012 logra volver a su equipo favorito, Borussia Dortmund.
Ya estando devuelta en Dortmund su nivel fue mejorando cada vez mas, y sus primeras temporadas fueron la época dorada del jugador que junto con Robert Lewandowski y Mario Gotze formaron un trío letal y que asustaba a todos los clubes contra los que se enfrentaban, logrando llegar hasta la final de la champions League en 2013 pero lastimosamente perdieron ante el Bayern de Munich.
