Sugar, sugar, sugar! It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to break away from.
Sugar is in everything. Some foods have loads of sugar due to it being in different forms. It grabs a hold of you and wants you to never let it go.
It tells you it’s the best thing for your life and you won’t survive without it. It’s with you from morning till night enticing you with it’s power to please if you let it. It whispers in your ear “you need me and you know it” as soon as it sees you resisting….
Sugar and I go way back. I’ve been addicted hooked on sugar for as long as I can remember. In the early days of my lifestyle change it was the biggest challenge for me to cut back on.
I was determined to do better and eat more fruits to consume more natural sugars and allow it to satisfy my sweet tooth cravings. I have failed many and many and many of times when I set a goal to intake less sugar…it’s pleasurable taste had a hold on me. It was as if I was taken over by it and lost my true self to it…a sugar zombie.
So why would I use this word (especially when I just announced my dislike of zombie movies)? Well, because I feel that’s the best description of myself when I am strongly on a sugar high or simply put addiction.
I can tell the difference when I am not hooked on it compared to when I’m struggling to get away.
When I turn into a sugar zombie my mind is cloudy, it’s harder for me to problem solve, I can’t focus for a long time, I’m overly hyper for a short time and then crash. This causes me to feel sluggish and weak where much doesn’t get done. I constantly want more and it’s never enough. As soon as the high fades away I need more sugar, Sugar, SUGAR! 🤤
When I am not hooked on sugar my mind is so clear! I can feel the clarity in my thinking, ability to focus better, sharp and quick on problem solving, feeling light and airy as if I can do anything AND I get better sleep.
I want to have a clear mind and clarity in my thinking at all times. I want to have energy to take care of my family and complete important tasks throughout the day. I can’t do these things when I’m a slave to sugar.
Thankfully I have been able to resist it more in my later years. I find healthier ways to get my sugar intake where I remain myself and not turn into the mindless creature that feens for more and more.
One major thing that has helped is that I bake most of our desserts so that I can control how much I sweeten them. Homemade always trumps store bought anyway. My kids are always excited to see what I’ll bake up next.
I had to figure out which foods I love that I could sweeten up more naturally in order to get my sugar fix. I do a lot of yogurt parfaits with organic oats and nuts and yummy fresh fruits. I also play around with my coffee adding in sweetness that gives me a nice but safe boost in the morning.
I came to the conclusion that it’s okay for me to keep some of my favorite sweets as long as I’m willing to give up the majority of unnecessary junk I was putting in my body.
Too much of anything is not good for us anyway so we have to find a balance where we are getting in a variety of different foods and not just eating the same things over and over again.
Due to my eldest son not wanting to eat meat anymore (details for another post) it has forced me to be even more creative with dinner selections. We are literally eating way more vegetable meals than we were before. It actually feels good to eat just veggies and no meats sometimes. It’s a lighter option for our bellies and doesn’t sit heavy weighing us down.
A good way I’ve found to get back on track once you’ve been sugar zombified is to FAST from whatever is causing you to stay in that state of mind. Literally, take a couple of days to a week and tell yourself…
ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! 🙅🏽♀️
Just walk away, put it down and claim back your mind!
I realize not everyone may struggle with this as much as I do (and you are still able to maintain sharpness and clarity) but if you are having any type of struggle with this you CAN resist it’s hold and walk away from it. Our health depends on our ability to reject what’s keeping us down or unhealthy.
I do not enjoy being this zombie and I told myself enough is enough and I am stronger than this addiction. I prayed and asked God to help me resist so I can feel better, be better and make better food choices. It feels wonderful being in control and having so much clarity!
Yes, you’re right, I do need you but I don’t have to stay in your grip. You tell me these lies that I can’t survive without you but limiting you has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life.
No, you’re not the best thing in my life my family is. And since my family is the best part I want to live long enough to spend many years with them…and doing so being healthy. So I had to let you go, burst free from your trance and fight for my health and mind. Now that I’m free, you will never have that much control over me ever again. NEVER!
You are small to me now…
sugar, sugar, sugar
