A 15 year old girl named Kagome Higurashi lives with her mother, grandfather and younger brother Sota on the grounds of a Shinto shrine. When she goes to look for her cat, Buyo, in the well near her house, a monster pulls her inside and takes her with it.
She reappears in Japan's Sengoku period. Apparently, a yōkai had attacked a village near the well, in order to steal the Four Souls Gem and kill the priestess who protected it. Because Kagome looks a lot like the woman, she ends up being attacked by a yōkai. Desperate, she ends up freeing the hanyou InuYasha, who was sealed by a sacred arrow in a tree.
