Thanks for the insights. Today the neighbor kids are playing with the dog in his yard, and is bounding with joy.

The dog has dark fur color pattern of the Old German Herding Dog. Longer hair and white neck/chest mane, and white along center of nose. The face seems more wide than long. Maybe a mix?
