What makes you happy? This is a question which seems easy at first. Try asking it several times to the same person and you will get different answers. I thought about it too. I think that we run towards various things in life and we miss the whole point. Of being happy.
A good strategy to observe this concept is to learn how to listen. To notice what people say and do without wanting to interfere. Each person has a story behind the story they tell. If you listen. To be able to learn how to get what people are not telling you is an art. We tend to fill in the dots with our own experiences and expect to already know what others will do and say. To our surprise, we get surprised.
You'll grow
I think that we have this innate desire to say our biggest secret to someone. To be close to somebody in a way which defies words or actions. The kind of intimacy some only dream of. What does it take to get there? Is human connection the real happiness we are really searching for? I look around me everyday and I analyse people. I listen to their stories and I can clearly see that happiness is such a vague concept for each and every one of them. What I realized is that it doesn't depend on how much money you have, how much you own, what kind of clothing you're wearing or how popular you are. I can see people who seem to have it all from the outside and still struggle to be happy. I can see some chasing for more material goods while being trapped in a state of agony. I think that happiness is an inner concept, something that you take along with you wherever you go.
Catch me if I fall
You can't attach happiness to people, some might disappear or disappoint you. You can't glue it to objects, they can vanish. You can't put it next to money, they lose value and you can lose them. Whenever you try to put your happiness outside, it always eludes you. You run, she runs. You never catch it and you're never happy. The chase is always a source of misery because there will always be something better to chase after you got what you wanted.
The happiness that you find inside yourself is the only one which will last. You take yourself with you wherever you go. You might go broke or wake up homeless and alone. You might lose relationships, people, friends. You might have to start all over again. You might have it all and you might have nothing. You have yourself in the darkest hours. We do crave connection and we will have it to the extent of our connection to ourselves. How can we chase happiness in others if we haven't found it in ourselves? The funny thing is that we rush towards happiness without realizing that we have it within, just a thought away. Have you reached within? Are you happy with what you've found?
