People don't really want to take responsibility for the fact that their level of self esteem is up to them. You literally have to build your self esteem yourself. It's not what people say to you that influences your self esteem. On the contrary, it's the things that you say to yourself. You have to earn your self esteem.
Many people say that they don't have self esteem. And sometimes it gets really confusing why they make such statements. Self esteem isn't something you have, it's something that you have to work hard for. It's something that you have to earn within yourself. Quite similar to trust. People have to earn your trust, you can't just trust any random person.
The same way trust is earned when a person - perhaps your family or friend, is always there for you when you need them. Over time, you trust that person, because the person has proven repeatedly that they're loyal to you. That's how self esteem is, but this time around, it's within yourself. Self esteem is more like you trusting yourself.

The reason I say it's more like self trust is because, so many people disappoint themselves constantly. They say they'll do something, and not do. They end up doing the very worst thing that they promised themselves they'll not do. When you do not discipline yourself to do what you promised yourself, you're destroying your self esteem.
The basic way you earn high self esteem within yourself - is by completing difficult things. Make a very difficult plan of what you want to achieve, perhaps within a day. Make sure you work hard and complete every task you set for yourself that day. You do this everyday for a while, and you'll start to trust yourself. By so doing you've earned your high self esteem by continuously working hard, and not disappointing yourself.
