One of the greatest challenges that a lot of people face in life is choosing between what makes them comfortable and what is right. There are times that doing the right thing will require you to sacrifice your comfort, your convenience, some opportunities, and even disappoint certain people. But some people actually choose their comfort over conscience, because it looks easy to ignore what is right then facing the consequences of standing by it. What you need to understand is that morality demands a lot from people. It makes them to make decisions and take choices that represent their values instead of just for immediate gains. The truth is that everyone knows when they are doing what is right. There is an inner voice that reminds you when something is wrong, this is your conscience. But some people tend to ignore it especially when it challenges their comfort.

You have to know that doing the right thing can actually come with a cost. There are times when being honest can cost you an opportunity, or when integrity can make you lose your popularity, or when standing by justice will make people to leave you. You may even lose friendships because you refuse to compromise or participate in wrongdoing. Or you may lose certain advantage because you refuse to do what is obviously wrong. But what you should remember is that not every opportunity should be grabbed with open arms, and not every advantage is worth taking. Tell me, what is the purpose of gaining something and end up losing both your humanity and your character in the process? You should understand that temporary comfort should not be more important to you than maintaining your integrity.
It is actually better to experience the temporary discomfort of standing by what is right, than living with the burden of knowing that you deliberately chose to do what is obviously wrong. You may feel it is easy to talk about integrity when you do not have anything to lose. The real test of your character will come when you have the opportunity to do what is wrong and people will not find out. The choices you make when people are not around is what shows your real self. You should maintain your integrity and your character even when it feels easier to walk against it. Your character is not determined only by what you say, but also by what you do.

You should develop the courage to stand by what is right even if every other person is doing contrary thing. In life, you need courage, consistency, and discipline to be able to live a morally responsible life. You have to learn when to say no, when to walk away from unhealthy situations, and then do not allow pressure from people to determine your choices and decisions. Some may see you as proud, or difficult, or as unreasonable person because you do not want to compromise your values. But do not allow the need for acceptance to make you to abandon your principles and your values. The truth is that you may not be able to determine or even influence the kind of opinion that people form about you, but it is within your control to determine your real self and the person you will become.
In life, what matters is not just what you have achieved, or how comfortable you become, or how many people have clapped for you. It is also about the values you have maintained, the principles you have kept, and the lives you have affected positively through your actions. When your conscience demands more than your comfort, then you need to obey the demands of your conscience. Learn to choose honesty over deception, choose justice over selfishness, and choose integrity over convenience. Living for comfort might just give you temporary satisfaction, but living a life of morals will be what will give you something more valuable like peace of mind, self-respect, and very importantly, building a character that you will be proud of. Always remember that your conscience is the inner police of your mind, so do not go against it.
