Hey everyone, how cool is this? We are approaching around just past mid winter and for some or other reason these Wine Barrel Bees seem to be a little hot during the day! The reason I think is due to the fact they closed the hole up in front with too much vigour and enthusiasm probably limiting airflow and keeping it super warm in Winter.
If you look closely the bee on the bottom left of the hole is veraciously flapping her wings. Going inside the hive there will be a line of a few bees doing the same in order to 'funnel' the hot air out of the hive. Truly incredible!
