Walking through Sibiu, in Romania, you will start to notice something strange. You may even have the feeling that someone or something is following you. Taking a look at the architecture of the city, you will begin to realize that your homes look at you. Many of the houses in the south and east of the city look as if they had some eyes looking from the rooftops.
These features, drawn from cartoons, leave the impression that the buildings (as well as the already famous crowds of people in Sibiu) never sleep. Though these eyes may seem like a Big Brother sinister surveillance program, they are actually strange-looking windows, according to Rador.
Houses use them as a ventilation system for their bridges. Most of these "eyes" were conceived between the 15th and 19th centuries. Despite their purely practical purpose, some claim that these "eye-catching" windows have been built to scare people off, making them believe they are always being watched and behave as such.
At the time when dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was in power, this architectural detail seemed to the inhabitants even more disturbing. It was not enough that the phones were heard, that people were questioned and that a number of families were on the "blacklist".
