Best Tips if You Want To Be a Professional Musician.

I wanted to share some tips to anyone trying to make a living in music. I’ve spent more than 10 years living from music full-time, and these are the things I think are the most important.

1. Be good.
   This is the most important and the most obvious. Spend an incredible amount of time getting good at your instrument or your skill. If you want people to pay you, you need to be at a level that people would pay for. Anyone can learn an instrument, most people learn instruments for their own personal enjoyment. If you want people to pay you for having fun, you need to be GOOD. You need to be amazing, and not just amazing, but consistently amazing. Meaning you are going to deliver on your awesome skill again and again, reliably. Spend lots of time getting good at your instrument, or your skill. If you are serious, that will probably mean a portion of your life will be dedicated to reaching that level. There is a difference between playing and practicing. Practicing means working on the things you are not good at. This will have to be a repeated activity. If you are a composer or a producer, same thing. You need to put in the time to learn how to be GOOD.
   

1. Be versatile. If you want to work in the music industry, versatility is incredibly important. First, versatility in styles, which ties into tip #1. You need to be able to play ANY style of music convincingly. If you are a producer/composer, you need to be able to produce or compose any style of music. Yes, finding a specific niche is important, but so is versatility. Being able to do many different things will keep you working. One of my biggest assets as a musician is my versatility. I can do many different things, which keeps options coming. Also, having different skills within music. Playing multiple instruments, knowing how to produce, compose, etc, will make a huge difference.

1. Be prepared for the lifestyle.
   Being a musician or working in the entertainment industry is unique. It often involves travel, and exciting situations. It also involves a fair amount of instability. If you just like music but don’t want an exciting life, you might want to think about your priorities. Also, you need to be prepared for instability. Music is an adventure, and a ride. If you are up for it, it’s amazing. But it’s not a career choice for the meek. You need to be bold. Also, be prepared for the amount of time you will need to spend to succeed.

2. Be a good person.
   It is very important in the music industry that you are able to get along with others and connect. People want to work with people that have a good vibe, it is just as important as being a good musician. Egos do not belong in music. There are so many good musicians, your ego is not going to set you apart from everyone else. Being a cool guy will. Learn how to socialize and network-don’t spend all your time in the practice room. Social skills are very useful in music. Also, good morals are mandatory. Music is a very free industry without a lot of rules. Your reputation will follow you.

3. Be proactive
   If the best musician in the world stayed in his house, what would happen? Nothing! You need to be putting yourself out there. You need to be presenting yourself. You can’t be afraid to share your talent.
   

1. Know the business.
   Music is a business. This is a weak spot for many musicians, and also a reason why they fail. You need to treat your music career as business, and you need to have other people treat your music career as a business too. Understand how to run a business, and the important parts of a business. Also, understand what sells and what doesn’t. Certain styles of music do not sell as well as other styles. But, with a good niche, you could find a place for your music.

2. Be patient.
   Being successful in music does not happen overnight. It takes many years of persistent effort. Failure, is part of success. You will have to get used to failure if you want to succeed in music. Giving up is not an option if you want to succeed.
   

1. Believe in yourself.
   This is possibly the most important tip. If you believe in yourself, there’s no limit to what you can do. If you don’t, no one else will do it for you. Music is career choice that takes time and will probably include some failure, but you are only limited by your drive to succeed and the level belief in yourself that you will succeed.

2. Do music because you love it.
   If you wake up every day and you want to do music, you should be a professional musician. If you are only after fame or money, pick a different career. Music is one of the riskiest professions ever. You NEED to have big dreams in music. But if these dreams are you ONLY motivation, you are better off picking a career that is guaranteed to make you money, like a banker or something. You have to enjoy the journey, and the process. If you don’t, it will be harder to succeed, and you will be unhappy when you don’t succeed.

La gente quiere trabajar con gente que tenga buena onda, es tan importante como ser un buen músico. Los egos no pertenecen a la música. Hay tantos buenos músicos que tu ego no te diferenciará de los demás. Ser un tipo genial lo hará. Aprenda a socializar y relacionarse, no pase todo su tiempo en la sala de práctica. Las habilidades sociales son muy útiles en la música. Además, la buena moral es obligatoria. La música es una industria muy libre sin muchas reglas. Tu reputación te seguirá.

   Si el mejor músico del mundo se quedara en su casa, ¿qué pasaría? ¡Nada! Tienes que ponerte ahí fuera. Tienes que presentarte. No puedes tener miedo de compartir tu talento.

2. Conozca el negocio.
   La música es un negocio. Este es un punto débil para muchos músicos y también una de las razones por las que fracasan. Necesitas tratar tu carrera musical como un negocio, y necesitas que otras personas también traten tu carrera musical como un negocio. Comprender cómo administrar un negocio y las partes importantes de un negocio. Además, entienda qué vende y qué no. Ciertos estilos de música no se venden tan bien como otros estilos. Pero, con un buen nicho, podrías encontrar un lugar para tu música.

3. Sea paciente.
   Tener éxito en la música no sucede de la noche a la mañana. Se necesitan muchos años de esfuerzo persistente. El fracaso, es parte del éxito. Tendrás que acostumbrarte al fracaso si quieres triunfar en la música. Renunciar no es una opción si quieres tener éxito.

   Este es posiblemente el consejo más importante. Si crees en ti mismo, no hay límite para lo que puedes hacer. Si no lo haces, nadie más lo hará por ti. La música es una elección de carrera que lleva tiempo y probablemente incluirá algún fracaso, pero solo está limitado por su impulso para tener éxito y el nivel de confianza en sí mismo que tendrá éxito.

2. Haz música porque te encanta.
   Si te despiertas todos los días y quieres hacer música, debes ser un músico profesional. Si solo buscas fama o dinero, elige una carrera diferente. La música es una de las profesiones más arriesgadas de la historia. NECESITAS tener grandes sueños en la música. Pero si estos sueños son su ÚNICA motivación, es mejor que elija una carrera que le garantice ganar dinero, como un banquero o algo así. Tienes que disfrutar el viaje, y el proceso. Si no lo hace, será más difícil tener éxito y se sentirá infeliz cuando no tenga éxito.
