Meet Mechel Dawn: A Teacher With a Dream Beyond Borders

There are people who choose a career, and there are people who see their career as part of a much bigger purpose. What I opt is the latter.

I am licensed professional teacher from the Philippines and a Bachelor of Secondary Education graduate majoring in English, I have always been drawn to one thing: helping people learn, grow, and become more confident in themselves.

My journey as an educator began long before I stepped into a formal classroom. During my college years, I volunteered as a Sunday School teacher, working with young children and discovering how meaningful teaching could be. What started as a volunteer experience gradually became almost three years of working with preschool-aged children through interactive lessons, songs, games, storytelling, writing, counting, and basic mathematics.

But my teaching journey didn't stop there.

I gained experience teaching learners from kindergarten through high school, both face-to-face and online, and later worked as an ESL teacher, helping students develop their English skills in areas ranging from everyday conversation and grammar to literature and Business English.

For me, teaching isn't simply about standing in front of a class and delivering information.

It's about creating an environment where students feel comfortable enough to try.

I believe that a good teacher should not only provide answers but also encourage curiosity, independence, confidence, and a genuine love for learning. My approach is learner-centered and interactive, with the belief that education should go beyond textbooks.

A Dream That Goes Beyond the Classroom

One of my biggest aspirations is to become a global educator.

Japan has particularly captured my heart. My interest in the country began through anime and gradually developed into a deeper curiosity about Japanese culture, values, language, people, and everyday life. I dreamed of experiencing Japan firsthand—not simply as a tourist, but as someone who can contribute to its educational community while learning from it in return.

What attracts me most is the opportunity to experience education from another cultural perspective.

I am especially inspired by values often associated with Japanese education and society, such as discipline, respect, responsibility, cooperation, continuous improvement, and consideration for others.

For me, teaching abroad isn't about leaving one country behind for another.

It's about building bridges between cultures.

My story is still being written—and Japan may just be the next chapter.
