This week at CwU is the budget meal challenge. Cooking a delicious and nutritious meal on a budget is an essential skill to learn. For most of history, there was little or no financial cost for human’s meals. Humans simply had to forage and hunt for their food. Life was mainly about finding food and eating it. But, fast forward a few thousand years to today and most people cannot really cook and often pay too much money for food. In major cities like New York a lunchtime salad is around $15. That’s $300 a month for lunch! Ouch! That’s why this week you guys are going to show us your best cheap meals.
Now let’s get the details out of the way. Your budget is 1 SBD per person and you can cook for up to 4 people. So, a meal for three people would have a 3 SBD budget. Any questions about this, please ask.
Also, please include a photo of the receipt for the food purchased and let us know the currency used. It would be great if you could show us the conversion to SBD.
Basic pantry items are not included in your budget and are considered freebies. Just so we are all on the same page, a pantry item is oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, flour, sugar, spices, dried grains, legumes, seeds or nuts and canned tomatoes. This is a basic pantry and so you can substitute items based on your lifestyle. For example for flour you could use all purpose, buckwheat, spelt, high gluten, rye, einkorn, almond, whole wheat, oat, semolina, cake or any other flour. It’s up to you. Also, if you don’t have dried beans or lentils and only have canned, that’s ok. I think everyone should be ok now with what is available to use in the pantry.
If you have a garden you can use those vegetables, fruits, flowers or nuts as a freebie too. Having a garden is a great way to cut down on food costs. Just take a photo of the item while you are harvesting it.
You can also use meat that you have hunted or fished. If you have a fresh kill or a freezer full of wild game, that is a freebie too. Hunting and fishing are great ways to get wild and fresh organic meat. Just take a photo of the item you are using.
Any items that you have foraged from the forest or even a dumpster are free! Both of these activities involve some risk! Haha. So, please take the requisite actions to do them safely.
There are so many directions you can go with this challenge, we are excited to see who will be the most resourceful and creative. Good luck!
