A little boy of four came back from school with lots of home fun activities. He is unable to read but can write.
In one of the activities he was asked to underline the correct answer among the options provided.
It was shocking to discover that the boy was circling every option there.
With great hope to get the teacher’s approval that he had done it.
For him doing it was enough as long as his pencil handwriting was on the book and no complaints for non compliance.
In that instance, I learned that you can have the materials and still fail to learn what is required of you. That obedience doesn’t always mean competence or understanding.
We had to erase everything and explain it carefully for him to understand.
I explained that doing it alone is not enough but getting it correct is ideal.
It is because to underline is to:
Indicate that you know and have made a choice: you are not guessing or double ticking. You have chosen to identify and se boundaries.
Set aside for easy observation, approval and identification : Like the teacher says underline the key points. Underline the correct answer among the options.
The KEY point and the CORRECT answer is the CHOICE you made.
Sometimes to underline a book can ruin it but to establish a choice or fact on a book saves reading strife.
Like the little boy's fear circles everything but faith and guidance underlines ONE. And that ONE is a choice.
