Been making a bit of a habit of staying up way too late, playing with MidJourney when I should be sleeping. At this point the novelty has mostly worn off, left me trying to figure out what in the hell am I trying to accomplish with it.
The ease with which AI art is made seems to subtract something from the significance we ascribe to 'art'. If anyone can readily make it, then what significance does any single piece of it have?
That was a bit discouraging, at least until until I realized I was approaching it all wrong. Who cares about significance, the payoff is in the message it conveys, the reactions it provokes.
With that little epiphany I set out to make stuff solely to elicit a response. Aimed for somewhere between vague unease and WTF, just something that couldn't be readily unseen.
Was easier said that done, almost felt like working backwards. The later it got the easier it was though, so maybe there's something to be said for late night coffee and insomnia.
