Apple, a giant in the technology industry has placed a ban on mining cryptocurrencies like bitcoin with the iphone. This new rule by Apple was updated in its developer guidelines.
Bitcoin mining generate excessive heat, drains the battery of the device and also strain the resources of the devices unnecessarily and this is what Apple aims to reduce by placing this new ban in the iPhone.
Apple revealed on its website that applications having any third party advertisements displayed within them may not be able to run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining.
Mining bitcoin requires a significant large chunk of energy and also computing power and it is not visible for anyone to totally rely on an iPhone or iPad but Apple intends to discourage and terminate any future attempt to mine cryptocurrencies that will require a lesser amount of energy and that will release lower heat energy on its device.
The guidelines include cryptocurrency but that language remained the same as an archived version of the site recorded in late May by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine.
According to Apple insider, who were the first to report the new Apple guidelines, the guidelines concerning crypto-related app was first set in 2014. This was after the app store did not include Coinbase and other cryptocurrency, it said it was as a result of some issues that had not been resolved
Apple insider did not state in its report when the new policy was updated and even though CNBC requested for a comment, it was not replied.
The use of high-powered computers are required during cryptocurrency mining because it is solely math. And the use of complex math equations is required to verify transactions involving bitcoin. Bitcoin is what miners gain as a reward for being able to solve complex equations.
Coinmint, a bitcoin mining company said the mining of bitcoin requires a computer that generates 1,400 watts, which is the same as one hair dryer.
It is said that a lot of apps on the iOS store claim to give users the ability to mine with power from their personal devices, including "Crypto Coin Miner" and "Cryptocurrency Cloud Mining. However, Cloud mining says it lets allows users to make money and earn cryptocurrencies and this doesn’t include major investment from direct involvement with hardware or software.
