Children and BB guns

I had a BB gun myself when I was a child and have no problem about children having BB guns. In fact it wa the first kind of gun I had fired my self. It was used for target practice before we moved up to fire the .410 shot gun the .22 rifle and the 20/20 rifle.

My father would set up targets for us to shoot at to get our aim down. Sometimes it was bales of straw with a homemade target painted on it. Sometimes it was fence post with tin cans on the top of them.

We were taught never to aim a gun at a animal or a person unless be planned on killing it or at least hurting it. Killing a animal was always better than hurting it. If you did kill a animal be prepared to eat it.

So last night as I was drinking my coffee I heard the child tell the Dad "I shot a squirrel in the head." And the dad saying "good job now see if you can hit that cat." This made me upset and I went over and asked if they needed to be shown how to skin and clean the squirrel so they could eat it. But for the cat you need to figure out how to skin and clean it yourselves to eat it because I have never killed or ate a cat.

The child got upset with the idea of eating the squirrel and the thought of eating the cat. The Dad told the child he didn't need to eat them. My only response was if you don't want to eat what you killed then maybe you should stick to shooting at targets. And a heads up ricochets hurt even if they are just BBs.

Now I have nothing against guns and have shot many of them,but I have never killed a animal that was not for food to eat. What I am against is shooting animals just to shoot them for fun or sport.

I have not heard the BB gun being fired today. Since I live in a apartment in the city I am fine with that.

Even a BB gun is a weapon with the power to kill small animals and hurt people.
