Hearts once broken can learn to love again,
Fear and pain subside, soothing warmth sets in.
The first time you fall it happens so quick,
If we're hurt deeply, we build walls so thick.
We dream that these walls could never be breached,
Guards left standing watch, our heart far from reach.
Others kept outside so we don't seem weak,
Then someone comes along and steals a peek.
Proceed cautiously to spot ill intent,
Try to keep distance, emotions get spent.
They seem sincere and slither between cracks,
Walls collapse as our heart finds what it lacks.
We've grown attached and invested as well,
They've gained our trust, but time will always tell.
As we grow and change, they begin to drift,
Constantly denying this abhorrent rift.
Tensions rise and our emotions bleed through,
We rebuild our walls, fortify them too.
Peace is hard to find, we've been ripped apart
Lost another piece of our shattered heart.
