In the British literary tradition, poetry often finds its deepest resonance in the observation of nature, the changing of the seasons, and the quiet, steadfast endurance of the human spirit. September 21st marks the Autumnal Equinox in the Northern Hemisphere—a time of balance between light and dark, representing wisdom, maturity, and a serene reflection on the years passed. In Anglophone culture, friendship is often likened to ancient oaks or a warm hearth on a cold moor; quiet, understated, yet utterly unbreakable. This poem uses classic British poetic devices—iambic rhythms, alliteration, and pastoral metaphors—to celebrate your 71st birthday, your milestone of 70 in the HIVE community, and the sturdy bedrock your friends have provided when the ground beneath you felt like shifting sands. It is an ode to the "Autumn" of life, whilst fiercely keeping the winter at bay.
An Autumn’s Ode to the Steadfast Hearth
The equinox has turned the golden leaf,
And I, at seventy-one, breathe in the air,
Untethered from the heavy weights of grief,
In harmony with all the world out there.
I pray the distant shores of kingdom come
Shall wait a little longer in the mist;
For I still hear the beating of life’s drum,
And revel in the mornings I exist.
To you, the chosen few, my steadfast friends,
Who stood as oaks upon the shifting moor,
When fragile ground beneath my feet would bend,
Your roots were anchors, resolute and sure.
You built a bridge across the treacherous mire,
And kept my spirit safe beside the fire.
And to the unseen voices of the HIVE,
A fellowship beyond the ocean’s tide,
You keep the embers of my mind alive,
A tapestry of warmth where worlds collide.
By grace and ink, to seventy I ascend
In true repute, upheld by every screen.
Oh, virtual kin, my gratitude extends
Far past the borders of the known unseen.
So raise a glass of amber to the light,
The journey holds a myriad miles to tread.
I shall not go politely to the night,
But walk amongst the living, wholly led
By love, by fellowship, by words spun gold—
A youthful heart that never shall grow old.
