For this occasion, I wanted to analyze one of the most iconic and well-known stories for children and adults of all generations, countries, and languages: Little Red Riding Hood. You know, the disobedient girl who ended up facing the consequences of her own irresponsibility. But before I tell you about this fairy tale, it's necessary that you know there are two versions: >Para esta ocasión quise analizar uno de los cuentos más icónicos y conocidos por niños y adultos de todas las generaciones, países e idiomas, me refiero a Caperucita Roja, ya saben la niña desobediente que terminó enfrentando las consecuencias de su propias irresponsabilidad, pero antes de hablarte de este cuento de hadas es necesario que sepas que existen dos versiones:

Overview/Resumen

Little Red Riding Hood was a beautiful girl who lived in a lovely little house in the woods with her mother. She was happy because her mother had bought her a beautiful new red hooded cloak, and for this reason, everyone called her "Little Red Riding Hood." One day, Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother, who lived on the other side of the woods, fell ill, and the girl's mother asked her to go and visit her and bring her some food. But first, she warned her not to stop for anything in the world along the way, and especially not to stray from the path, as it could be dangerous because the Big Bad Wolf often roamed that area. Little Red Riding Hood agreed and set off, but along the way, she forgot her mother's warnings and stopped to pick flowers for her grandmother, even straying a little from the main path. The Big Bad Wolf was spying on her, so he ran to the grandmother's house, knocked on the door, and imitated Little Red Riding Hood's voice, so the grandmother let him in.

Caperucita asintió y se dedicó a emprender la marcha, pero por el camino olvidó las advertencias de su madre y se detuvo a cortar flores para su abuela, desviándose incluso un poco del camino principal. The beast devoured the old woman, took one of her nightgowns and nightcaps and put them on, then lay down in bed and waited for the little girl to arrive. Little Red Riding Hood felt completely safe when she arrived, believing she was standing before her grandmother, so she approached. However, some things caught her attention, such as her eyes, which seemed very large. But when Little Red Riding Hood asked why they were so big, the supposed grandmother replied, "They're to see you better." She gave the same answer regarding her nose: "It's to smell you better." And as for her mouth... that's where the real trouble began. The wolf got out of bed and revealed his true nature: "It's to eat you better." In this way, he devoured the little girl as well, but fortunately, a hunter who was nearby heard the commotion, killed the wolf, cut open its belly, and rescued Little Red Riding Hood and her grandmother safe and sound.

>La bestia devoró a la ancianita, tomó uno de sus camisones y gorros de dormir y se los puso, luego se acostó en la cama y esperó a que llegara la niña. My Opinion/Mi Opinión

The story has a main and very positive message about the value and importance of obedience and prudence. If Little Red Riding Hood had listened to her mother, she wouldn't have fallen victim to the wolf, and if her grandmother had been more cautious, she wouldn't have let him into her house. However, some people are unaware that although this story is part of the Brothers Grimm's collection, they actually wrote the most well-known version in 1812, which is the one I just summarized for you in the previous paragraphs. The original tale is by Charles Perrault from 1697, and, strangely enough, it's a darker and more hopeless version, perhaps as a more stark way of warning people about the dangers of a lack of prudence. In Perrault's version, there's no mother to warn the girl about the wolf's danger; she relies on common sense. Nor is there a hunter to act as a hero and restore peace.

>El cuento tiene un mensaje principal y muy positivo acerca del valor y la importancia de la obediencia y la prudencia, si Caperucita hubiese escuchado a su madre no hubiese sido víctima del lobo y si su abuela hubiese sido más precavida no lo hubiese dejado entrar a su casa. Sin embargo algunas personas ignoran que a pesar de que esta historia forma parte del compendio de los Hermanos Grimm, realmente en 1812 ellos escribieron la versión más conocida que es la que acabo de resumir para ustedes en los párrafos anteriores, pero el cuento original es de Charles Perrault en 1697 y, por extraño que nos parezca, es una versión más obscura y sin esperanzas, quizá como una manera más cruda de advertir a las personas sobre los peligros de la falta de prudencia. On the other hand, Perrault's version seems more focused on and directed at young adults than children, especially girls, using the wolf as a metaphor for the seducers who surround maidens seeking casual fun. While the wolf has always been an archetype of manipulation and deceit, as have foxes, the fool in Perrault's version asks Little Red Riding Hood to take off her clothes and get into bed, reinforcing the idea that it is indeed a cautionary tale about sexual predation. But in this case, there is no hunter to rescue anyone; here, everyone faces the consequences of their actions or their lack of good judgment, common sense, and prudence.

>Por otra parte la versión de Perrault parece estar más enfocada y dirigida a la juventud que a los niños, en especial a las muchachas, tomando al lobo como una metáfora de los seductores que rodean a las doncellas en busca de diversión sin compromisos, aunque el lobo siempre ha sido un arquetipo de la manipulación y el engaño, al igual que los zorros, por otra parte el bobo de la versión de Perrault le pide a caperucita que se quite la ropa y se meta en la cama, lo cuál refuerza la idea de que en efecto es una historia para advertir sobre la depredación sexual. I've never read it, but there's a second part to this story written by the Brothers Grimm in which Grandmother and Little Red Riding Hood face another wolf together, putting to the test the lessons learned from their previous experience. I think that would be wonderful to read. In any case, I think both versions are fantastic for warning about life's dangers. The forest represents the world as it is: uncertain, enigmatic, full of good and bad things. It can signify danger because predators and beings with ill intentions live there, but it can also represent hope: it offers flowers and fruit. It's all a matter of being cautious and knowing how to recognize signs, knowing how to listen to the advice of those with more experience and putting it into practice.

>Nunca la he leído pero existe una segunda parte de esta historia escrita por los hermanos Grimm en la cuál la abuela y Caperucita se enfrentan juntas a otro lobo, poniendo a prueba el aprendizaje obtenido tras la anterior experiencia. Creo que eso sería grandioso de leer. En cualquier caso pienso que ambas versiones son fantásticas para advertir sobre los peligros de la vida.
