I will try to express what a relief it is today, to get some momentum behind my sewing practise again! The atelier has been a bedroom and a living room, a store room and a workshop - until things shifted immensely this week, as we effectively moved our makeshift kitchen into our new cottage - and could for the first time, properly spread out our creative stuff in the atelier!!
AND! The hoohah of trying to find the right rubber loop/ belt for the sewing machine table, so we could improvise a pedal set-up (being somewhat challenged for electrical current these days)... I was gifted the table a couple of years ago, measured my antique Brother machine, thought it didn't quite fit the table hole-for-machine, almost forgot about it...
Then realised that, taking the plastic bottom-box off of my machine: it fit the hole perfectly! Just a space for the rubber belt, which connects the machine wheel to the pedal wheel of the table. Got it set up quickly, then racked my brain about what materials were on our premises, and took an old garden hose apart, cut it to what I hope is the right size, sewed it into a loop and glued it for extra strength. Just waiting to try it out today, now the glue is fully set. I'll let you know how it goes!
So on Sunday afternoon, super-tired with heat and exhaustion of moving (one room of our) house, then rearranging the two rooms of the atelier, I couldn't help but throw myself into the beginnings of a new project: white cotton bedlinen to summer dress extravaganza 😍❤️🔥👐 woop woop!
It's my favourite kind of fabric to work with, especially with it being so bloomin' hot. The cotton feels cool under my sweaty hands, and it has such a beautiful way of draping itself - which modern cotton cannot compare to.
This particular piece of fabric has a funny shape, with a large diamond hole in the middle of it. This lent itself well to a nice drape across the shoulders and chest. Then I cut the other half of the fabric and added it to the bottom of the new garment.
I shaped the back a little, and began working on a simple sleeve idea... That'll have to be the next post, as we are dog-tired this evening, and I also want to wait for the brighter morning light, to try sewing on the pedal table.
