"She was poetry
But he couldn't read".
I saw this poem somewhere on Instagram and it reminded me of a guy I used to be friends with.
Let's call him X.
X was an senior friend, he liked me very much but I was totally " meh" about him.
I liked him as a friend but that was it, no romantic attraction whatsoever.
For two years he asked me out and each time I say no he'd chill and ask again.
My friend thought I was mad, X is a very handsome guy, brilliant and rich. He was that guy that most girls had a crush on.
My friend calls him "Pappy water" he was very handsome, too handsome and girls then would talk about how they wonder what he saw in me and bla bla bla.
One day while complaining to my cousin about him, I went "How will I like X? He's not someone I can ever like, he's even too fine sef. Why will a person be that fine sef? For what? Why is his teeth that white? He's too perfect, his perfection is very sickening".
I remember she looked at me shook her head and said " You don't deserve X".
I was very much aware of X's good qualities, I just was not interested. At a point, I sat down and asked myself why I did not like him and I concluded that I did not like him because he was too serious with school work.
It irritated me.
I wasn't exactly nonchalant about school and stuff, I actually took it very seriously but I take time to play. This guy's seriousness was over the top.
I also didn't like the fact that this dude was fine. I mean, he wasn't even fine, normal fine.
His handsomeness was too much and it just annoyed me.
Now these would have scored high points with other girls but for me it was a turn off.

That same period, I had this friend who I really liked.
We were vibing until this new girl came.
Very aggressive girl.
Almost everyone hated her, she was strange.
She only reads horror novels and all she talks about is how she wants to play with people's intestines and stab them in their neck.
I was legit scared of her and so many people were too but this dude liked her.
For a week, I nursed being rejected and the next week I kept wondering why he would pick her over me.
One day when the dust had settled and I started being civil around them and all, I hung out with them and all they talked about it crazy stuff and horror novels and 7D horrors, I was scared to death.
On my way home that day I realised why he liked her, they had something in common.
I hate horrors, I'd rather paint my nails and read romance novels because in my opinion there is enough horror in the world, why would I want to read about it again?
Heck I even avoid Juliee Obiano's wall, I still can't get the imagery of the last I heard from her off my mind.
While I am a sweet(yes I'm sweet) nice, gentle girl and some people would like me for that, he did not because gra gra was his type(what? The beef is still there).
I saw all of X's good qualities but I wasn't attracted to them because they were not the qualities I wanted.
Sometimes we are just not some people's type and spec and that does not mean there is something wrong with us or that we are inadequate.
Not everyone will see our awesomeness, some will be blind to it.
Some will see it but will not care much for it and that's okay.
We should learn not to take rejection personally.
Most of the times it's not about us, what we are or what we've done.
