One major factor that influences personal growth is a positive mindset shift. I have witnessed people shift from mediocrity to become excellent role models from just understanding how the mind works and that strong decision to shift from having a negative mindset to a positive one.
Most times, the root problem people face might not even be a lack of opportunities, money or other reasons. It might just be the inability to properly channel the power of the mind towards every aspect of life.
This mindset problem can be based on different factors such as one's environment, past, experiences, belief system, association and many others.
Let me share my personal experience with you🤗
I remember years back in High school, I was very intelligent but would always shy away from associating with people especially when it came to addressing crowds.
Fortunately, I was made a senior prefect in my final year which mostly required me to address students and treat issues as the case may be. At that point, I could do anything humanly possible to escape because I felt my whole world was crashing. Most times, when I was called to address people, I would shake out of fear and wish the ground could just swallow me up.
Things went on this way till after my final exams. Later on, I was selected by our Headteacher to take the valedictory speech during our graduation party and this made me really sad. Imagine having to read my speech in front of parents, teachers, guests of Honour, students and even strangers. I felt sick and angry for no reason. I met a close friend for help who gave me two books titled The power of the mind by Pastor Chris and The power of positive thinking by Norman Vincent Peale. At first, reading this book looked like a waste on me because all I was expecting was some sort of magic.
I reluctantly started reading and applying some steps and in the long run, those books became a huge blessing to me. They contributed heavily to my positive mindset shift.
One of my favourite quotes that have helped me over the years is from Norman's book.
Be bold, be strong and mighty forces will come to your aid - Basil king.
Fast forward to the graduation day, giving that valedictory speech was like the stage was made for me. I had decided to let go of my fears, trust in my abilities to deliver and give my very best. I got many gifts and accolades from people who I barely knew and I tell you, this was only the beginning of a positive mindset shift for me.
Surprised, right?🤔
I know you might be wondering how I could switch over time.
Let me share some very helpful tips.
Imagine offering a million dollars to someone who believes that he will always be poor and cannot amount to anything good in life 🤔. It's just like pouring water inside a basket. Such a person cannot make proper use of that opportunity or even impact lives positively all because of having the wrong mindset about himself.
Even the Holy books say:
Guard your heart (used interchangeably with the mind) with all diligence for out of it flows the issues of life.
It's quite evident that what we process in our mind and allows in there stays and have a huge effect on our productivity. So, it's important to guard dearly what we consume inwards daily.
We process lots of information gotten from different sources therefore we need a filter system in place to help checkmate what's right or not.
Renewing the mind comes from knowledge.
You cannot renew what you don't know is faulty in the first place.
So what are the factors that can influence our mindset if properly used?
Association with people really plays a huge role in how we see things. If the people around you see lack, poverty, infidelity, hate as a normal occurrence, then you need to redefine your circle.
No wonder the popular saying "show me your friends and I will tell you who you are and where you are heading to."
From Association, we most times face certain peer pressures to meet up to a standard. Now, this pressure can be either positive or negative depending on what's allowed in your circle of friends.
Therefore, define your circle of friends.
Walk with the wise and become wise.
What really defines people is knowledge. We are in a time where most people don't yearn for the right knowledge anymore. We tend to believe wrong information so easily that it affects the way we see things.
For example, because Mr. X who is very popular says something is right doesn't necessarily make it right without verified proof.
Seeking the right knowledge can help shift your mindset the right way and also produce better results.
Reading books helps to give a round overview of a particular subject which can then help solidify one's mindset about something. We need to build that reading culture because from reading books, we get to see other people's opinions, facts, experiences which we can learn from.
Interesting, right?😃
A very big question? What should be our next step after considering all these factors?
The answer is quite simple... Put all we have learnt to work.
After learning all there is, the next step is applying them to our daily activities and life in general. We need to put them to work and understand that this ain't magic. It takes deliberate action, consistency and a never give up spirit.
Sometimes, we also need to let go of mistakes made before and embrace changes.
You cannot be who you want to be because you are too attached to who you have been.
So, instead of asking yourself "Why is this happening to me?" Rather ask "What is this teaching me?"
See positive moves in everything you do.
Change is in stages. Keep pushing and aim for that positive mindset shift. Much love😍
