It's true what they say that you can never advise a woman in love, yeah, that's me.
The happiest day in my life has got to be the day I got married to my husband. We dated for seven years before making things official.
I was fresh out of secondary school when I met him, and he was already a university student at the 300 level.
This part, I'm not going to skip, how I met him. My elder sister was at the university too and had a boyfriend. The said boyfriend had a friend who was dating my sister's then-bestie.Ok, so the two handsome, young men would pull up in our house to rendezvous before going out on a group date or just chill in.
On this day, my husband was the third wheel, he tagged along. I apologize for not remembering all the details, but we were matched together and that was it.
I gained admission into a university in another state, and we both had the notion deep down that the long-distance relationship wouldn't work. Mind you, I was already in love with him by this time, but I thought it wouldn't work with the distance.
No point asking you to guess, you guessed right,it did work out. When two intentional people are ready to make love work out, even wild horses and chariots haven't got a chance.
Okay, so, I used to travel down to my hometown every weekend to be with him, he was a student and had his apartment. Every time I left, I always left feeling empty like a part of me was missing. Sorry, I forgot, the coming home part, I used to sneak in. I always came at the risk that I might bump into one of my family members in town, and I wouldn't be telling this story now. My father was a very strict and desciplined man, and he would have skinned my hide had he found out.
Wait! Yes, I remember. I did bump into my elder brother in town on one of such visits, and I froze at the spot. Fortunately, he was passing by in his car, and couldn't park immediately, it was a very busy road, and he had to find a safe place to park. I vanished before he was done parking,he called me on phone to say he saw me, "must be a joke," I said. "I'm in school, I even have a test tomorrow morning. The person might just look like me." I said sounding as offended as I could. He dropped the matter, but I knew he knew I was the one, and he knows I know he saw me too. The bottom line, I was safe.
Anyhoo, I loved my boyfriend-turned-husband and I don't mind telling you that I loved him more than he loved me. Chill, please, before you conclude I didn't use my brain. I used my brain, I went into the relationship with my eyes wide open, but try as I did, I fell blindly in love, and I didn't even know when it happened I swear.
I'm the type who always likes to be in control, I could drink an entire whiskey bottle, and I wouldn't even stagger, I have a way of controlling my actions. I know my limits, and I will never exceed them. All my things are usually in order, spic, and span, but boy! When I fell in love,I fell hard. I discarded all my principles and policies. I used to think I was a hard girl, till love said, "Hold my cup." and did its thing on me.
I finally understood why they say people in love do stupid things, many have wondered why, but I can tell you for free that it's because your will is no longer yours when you fall in love. Don't think, "Oh! I'm different, it can never be me." it could be anybody though, I used to think the same way too until it did. Even when we broke up for months and reconciled, the feelings were still just as hot.
Sorry, I digress. I would have loved to get married immediately after my university education, but it took me longer than I thought. I had a few extra years that I did in school. I'm sure you can figure out why. I'm not proud of that fact, but it's a phase and it's past, so I can at least own my own story right?
I finished my extra years and we got married immediately after he proposed. You can't imagine the feeling, the exhilaration I felt sending out invites and picking Aso ebi (uniform wear for the occasion). I mean, I wasn't going to have to sneak around anymore, I own all the copyrights to flaunting my man.
Moving on, that day came, bless God. I don't think any other bride could ever be as happy as I was. We were pronounced Mr and Mrs and right there and then, in the presence of God and people. We sealed it off with a kiss so long it should have made it to the Guinness Book of Records.
Even my father's expression was funny, he looked at me like his daughter had been swapped. If only he knew how freaky his last born, baby of the house, fragile being was, he would have gotten over it quicker, lol.
"How would you feel about sneaking off?" My husband whispered to me at the reception during our first dance and I giggled like a schoolgirl.
"What about all the guests? They came for us you know? It would be rude to bail out on them." I whispered in his ear as he held me tighter.
"Which is why I'm sure they won't mind. They came here to celebrate our happiness and part of it is spending private moments together away from prying eyes. I'm sure they won't mind, it's our day after all." He licked my ear as he made his case.
I was sold by this time already. "Okay, I'm game. Would you like to go first?" I asked already looking around for the nearest exit.
"Ladies first remember? Do you remember the back exit we saw when we came to check out the hall? I already made plans for it to be left open. You go on, I'll be right behind you."
I gathered my gown and made my way to the toilet like I just wanted to use the restroom. He joined me in the car a few minutes later, and I'll leave your imagination to do justice to the how the whole night went.
You only live once, if you find love, I say hold it tight, caress it, then choke it in a nontoxic way and never let go of it.
