I've never been someone that bothers to make new year resolutions, what will be, will be you know? One could make new year resolution (s) and not fulfill it cause of unseen challenges. Don't get me wrong, I set goals ans targets like everyone else, but I keep them to myself with the mindset that I'm not going to hassle myself over it. I know people usually make new year resolutions to give up bad habits or just to set goals they intend to meet and I respect that them for that for real.
I think what triggered this sort of mindset is the fact I finished secondary school very early, and I already mapped out how early my journey through life will be. I figured by the time I was 25, I would be done with school, get married, have money of my own, get married or settle down. Well, the joke was on me, lol. It took me three years to gain an admission into the university after I completed secondary school, and three more extra years after the required four years before I graduated. It's okay, you can laugh at my expense, I can take a joke.
In the interest of full disclosure, I have no one to blame for the turn of events, I'm an adult, the least I can do is take responsibility. I know some factors contributed to everything that happened, but common, I messed up big time.
Okay, so since my life calendar has been messed up, I picked up and focused ahead. There are really no much regrets by the way, it was just a lesson I deserved to learn.
For some years, I haven't given my mother any money due to some certain financial issues. I've dealt with some crazy shit for the last few years and giving her money and buying stuff for her hasn't been possible. Ive given her plenty in the past, but the past is past, I have to do it in the present and in the future. I've felt nothing but guilt since I haven't and it hurt me deeply. Not that she minds, she's doing very well and doesn't have money issues but I gotta do what I gotta do.
The major part of last year was difficult but towards the end of it, things turned out for good. I got lots of writing jobs back to back and I got paid well. Last Christmas celebrations, I was able to go visit my mum in style and for the first time on some years I didn't go empty handed. I did everything I intended to do financially and she was estactic, not because of the gifts and money, but because I was starting to get back on my feet.
She was recently sick and got admitted to the hospital, and when I was given the outrageous bills for the private ward she slept in two days, I paid immediately without flinching. I didn't wait for my siblings to show up before I paid. I would have waited normally cause of money, but this time I did it and proudly too if I may add. I know some people argue that taking care of one's problem is not a responsibility for the children, but I disagree. I disagree because once you have parents that have sacrificed everything for you, you would be an ingrate to not spoil them every chance you get. There are deadbeat parents all over the place that make it clear that they don't owe their kids nothing and abandon them to their fate. Responsible parents deserve to be celebrated all the time. We can always agree to disagree though, that's just my own belief, everyone is entitled to his or hers.
I did something completely out of character last year, I made a resolution to do better. I want to take care of her. Perhaps, I made the resolution because I saw her in the hospital laying on the bed and it hit me that she was getting older and it was time she started enjoying the soft life.
The only thing I'm looking forward to this year is to take care of my mother. I'm going to give her a vacation this year to any country of her choice. My father died a few years ago, and since he's not here to partake in it, I'm going to give her two for one.
I'm looking forward to seeing the smile on her face when she realizes where she's going for her vacation. I know how to extract it from her in a way she won't suspect. In the pursuit of happiness, financial stability, dreams and other goals, let's not forget to give accolades to the people that gave up everything they could have had for us.
In the meantime, I'm just going to rack up money and keep it by the side for the most legit reason ever. It's valid right?
