Catalonian pyrenees feels like such an underrated destination. Everyone knows barvelona and the beaches but I don't often see people mention the beautiful ancient towns that you can visit all around.
One such city (im going to call it that since it has a cathedral) but its a very small place, more like a village in size called VIC
This city had a roman temple dating back to the 2nd century in excellent condition since a castle was built around and on top of it, shielding it from decay.
Unfortunately I didn't manage to get a photo of it because there were hoards of tourist groups around it, it was like being back in oxford where you could barely walk on the pavement because of all the people.
But really it's not quite that extreme and for the most part the centre is pedestrianised and quite pleasant to walk around.
The archecture is really fascinating all around, there's the catalan modernista style, there's romanesque and baroque, moorish and gothic. It's a beautiful window into history and many buildings were still derelict and are just waiting to be regenerated.
Which give this town a kind of Berlin feel with street art and vintage look, there are some squatters in the derelict building, and people upcycling.
It also feels like a very political place, with catalan independence graffiti and motifs everywhere
I only spent a few hours in VIC but ill certainly go back, the journey is only an hour away from barcelona and cost €5 for a single ticket and double for a return. I feel its well worth the trip.
