Hello, friends from the Daily Blog community, how are you today? I hope you're doing great! This is my first time posting here. I tried my best and hope you enjoy it.
So, about a week ago, I went to the Valentinos Circus.
I'll be honest: I didn’t like circuses. Being a fan of horror, thrillers, and mysteries, circuses and clowns have often been portrayed in those genres in ways that gave me the creeps. Circuses ended up giving me bad vibes.
My friends had plans to go, but the moment they suggested it, I said I wouldn’t join. They tried to convince me, talking about how magical and fun the experience would be, but I just ignored them.
Then one ordinary day, while I was taking a nap, there was an insistent knock at my door. It was my younger brother, saying that the city council was giving away tickets to go. But if I wanted to go, I had to get ready quickly since the show was about to start. Guess what? I took those free tickets as a sign from the universe and got ready quickly to go. I had nothing to lose… Well, I did lose something, can you guess what? The bad image I had of circuses.
As soon as we arrived, it was a sensory overload. Lots of cars, people walking to and fro, music outside that had nothing to do with the circus… Well, nothing unusual for my city when a new place opens up, what can I say?
The queue to get in was a chaotic crush of people, wrapping all the way around the enormous circus. The ticket queue added to the crowding. The noise was already making me dizzy. And what's that smell? Cigarette smoke? Oh no!
We waited in line for a few minutes, but it looked like we’d miss the show, which was about to start, and the next one wouldn’t be until 9 p.m. It was barely 7.
The line moved every ten minutes, but we weren’t even close to getting in. Then my mom, who had stayed outside the entrance, told us that people were skipping the line, and we should go with her. Two minutes before the show started, the guard at the entrance, who seemed like a nice guy, let us in without a fuss. He even urged us to hurry since the show was about to begin. Yes, it was strange, but with all the chaos, it felt like even the staff didn’t care much about the rules, just about having fewer people hanging around outside. They simply wanted everyone inside who had tickets. This was my final clue that fate wanted me there.
Walking in felt like stepping into another world. One of bright colors and warm lights, the smell of popcorn and hot dogs. Warmth, laughter, and happy people. It felt like a hug.
My brother and I took a moment to stop and admire the lobby before entering the actual circus, which was packed with excited people gathered around an empty stage illuminated by large white lights.
We rushed to find seats, fearing we wouldn’t get any. As we walked, the lights went out, followed by the crowd’s euphoric cheers, which quickly spread to me, filling me with a childlike excitement. It reminded me of the first time I visited the same circus, 14 years ago.
But enough about how I felt. Let me tell you what happened once I sat down, haha.
The show started with a few jokes, as expected. I thought that since it was a show aimed at children, I wouldn't find it funny, but I definitely did. The charisma with which they delivered them could make even the grumpiest person burst into laughter. It was a truly enjoyable moment.
But I remembered that circuses aren’t just about laughter. They’re also about fascination. After the jokes that set the mood, the jugglers took the stage.
First, they began by delighting us with classic juggling. The synchronization and rhythm were truly admirable, offering a beautiful visual spectacle. But one of these performers stood out in particular.
At first, he made a mistake. Who knows if it was human error... or if it was simply part of the show to surprise us with what came next.
He managed to juggle with eight rings. I can only imagine how nervous he must have been, because all eyes were on him. Yet, even if he stumbled earlier, it’s a skill I truly applaud; if it were me, all eight would have fallen, haha.
But these jugglers aren’t talented on their own, they are also amazing as a team. What I enjoyed the most was the contrast between the dim lighting and the brightly glowing rings, which I found truly mesmerizing.
I had problems uploading GIFs here on Hive, as it seems to overload the system after uploading several. I opted then to share the videos of my experience on YouTube and attach it here, although some fragments of the video are poorly recorded, keep in mind that I had my cell phone in my hand while enjoying the shows, so I didn't notice the errors in the audio until I got home. Still, I wanted to share a little piece of joy.
Right after the juggling, they did something they called “flying hats”, the name of which already indicates what it's all about. I was surprised how easy it is to surprise people, just by throwing hats as if they were frisbees; and I won't lie to you, I was also amazed with an act that is so simple to describe, but so interesting to watch.
Finally, that spectacle of flying colors and shapes came to an end. The lights went out for a few seconds, to then reveal one of the Valentino brothers, playing a saxophone.
Specifically, he was playing the melody of Jeanette's “Why Are You Leaving?”, which was at least sort of an arrangement. I like that song, but listening to it fills me with an inexplicable melancholy, so I avoid listening to it. At that moment, the show was somewhat nostalgic for me, I imagine because of the music, as it reminded me of the time that goes by so fast without us noticing it. Fourteen years ago I was in this same circus, although not admiring the same show, not even remotely; but even so, it was like a window to the past, during that short time where the melody of the saxophone sounded with a mixture of joy and sadness, until it was interrupted.
Once again, Renato entered, out of nowhere, wearing colorful clothes along with a huge hat, while playing a harmonica and dancing to the cheerful music coming out of it.
And so, once again, the show took on a cartoonish tinge, because as soon as his brother took the harmonica from him and kicked him off the stage to continue playing, Renato would pull out another harmonica, repeating the cycle over and over again. What I found most comical was the variety of sizes of the harmonicas he pulled out each time, from a giant one to a tiny one.
At the end he revealed, with a laugh, that under his cheek there were many more harmonicas, making everyone burst out laughing. Then he is finally kicked off the stage, but comes back with one more instrument, some kind of horns. But that's when it all gets even more implausible.
It was at the end, when Renato starts pulling mice out of his pants, and then he takes them off and it's full of little drawings of mice, and then he runs away screaming. But the silliest thing was when three mouse botargas came out and chased him off the stage. That exact moment was so cartoonish, it made my belly hurt from laughing so hard, and it's for that very reason that I didn't record that exact moment.
And you may think it's too silly to laugh, but I guess I learned that's what circuses are for. Laughter is life.
After this moment of such wholesome, familiar, and enjoyable humor, it was time for another incredible show. In this one, the protagonist would be a traditional toy well known in Venezuela, but also in other Latin American countries: the spinning top.
We are used to watch how they spin on the ground, sometimes playing to collide with others, but have you ever seen them maneuver in the air? Needless to say, this person is not only talented and an artist, but must also possess knowledge in physics, to do these maneuvers so perfectly; because yes, the spinning top has its physics explanation, but don't ask me, because it is my least favorite subject.
| ! |
|---|
Even with the biggest spin I've ever seen, he still managed to pull off an incredible maneuver. At that moment I just thought about the physical strength you must have, and not just strength, but coordination to pull off what he did.
But the moment that made me scream and applaud like crazy was when he managed to make the spinning top “fly”. You can't really see it from the video, but he was using a very thin thread to make the spinning top run around. And my question is, how did he get it to spin so high up? Probably, it was a trick, but it was such a good one, that he deserves all the applause he got.
When the lights came back on, came a common act in any circus: bringing in someone from the audience to be part of the show. I must admit that at that moment I was nervous, because if they chose me, I thought, I would not have wanted to participate. Luckily, they only chose men, and my brother said he would have wanted to participate.
Anyway, there was no shortage of laughter at this point in the show, as it consisted of the participants having to dance, doing moves that were a bit silly and that someone would not consider doing in public in any other context. It amazes me how contagious joy is, because seeing people laughing, without worries and simply living the moment, was something that made me happy too; especially seeing the children enjoying the night, free of the worries that would hammer the mind of an adult or young person today.
The person with whom I laughed the most was this man in the red shirt, because in spite of his serious facade, he surprised us all with his witty and joviality. Again I say: laughter is life.
When we talk about circuses, we think of clowns, almost automatically. Then came the moment when they would be the protagonists of the show; however, I did not pay attention to this moment of the show, because something bigger was cooking in the background: they were installing the wheel of death.
I had only seen this show through videos, as I don't remember ever seeing it on my previous visit to the circus. I was so excited about what was about to happen, I could only jump up and down in my chair waiting for it to start.
And so, after getting countless laughs out of the children with the clown show, one of the acts that excited me the most began.
I must admit that I was nervous that something could go wrong, because although it is true that these people are prepared for this and comply with the respective safety measures, there is always a margin of error that can be catastrophic. Besides, the name “wheel of death” was not particularly hopeful. But I also believe that this is one of the purposes of the circus, besides getting us to laugh and fascination, it makes us expectant, thinking “will they be able to make it?”
One of the moments I enjoyed the most, was when the third biker arrived, that blonde-haired woman. I was proud to hear that she was the first woman in this act, and I was proud that she had the opportunity to do what she loves and be included, regardless of gender stereotypes or anything like that. I even felt represented by her, she is a strong woman, and above all, brave.... As anyone who dares to participate in this very dangerous show.
I uploaded GIF because I didn't know if there would be problems with the copyright of the music that was playing at the time. Likewise, in the one of the dances, it marked copyright alert on YouTube, that's why I didn't upload it.
My favorite moment of this show was the music, because it's no secret that I'm a fan of rock and metal music. And even more, this moment I didn't record, but at the end of the act they played my favorite band, Bon Jovi. I was very happy about that.
After this, there was a pause in the show, because they were setting up the necessary infrastructure for the next show, in the meantime, they decided to play with the audience, bringing clowns to throw giant balls to the audience, to bounce them between everyone.
I was sitting in the last row, so the ball didn't get there. It was sad, but not for me, but for the girls sitting next to me, disappointed, poor things!
While the show was paused, I took a couple of selfies because I was feeling cute that day.
In the next act, they brought us something even more surprising: the bullet man. Of this I can only say that I could not enjoy it, because the loud sound of the cannon made me scared and I did not see the exact moment where the man flew, and it also did not come out very well in the recording because I moved my cell phone. I must admit I felt a little silly about this, because even though I was expecting the explosion, it took me by surprise. I decided not to upload this recording to YouTube, but I leave you a GIF.
After the applause and some girls dancing to cheer, which let me tell you: they were very pretty and I admire how athletic they looked, we moved on to the last show: the trapeze artists.
I feel that this is one of the attractions that did not surprise me so much, because I had already remembered seeing it a long time ago. Even so, this doesn't mean that I don't admire the skill, synchronization and coordination that exists to achieve such acrobatics. What did leave me thinking, was when it is mentioned that, whoever was in charge of receiving their companions, had their lives in their hands; because it is true, I think it takes a very great concentration and strength to receive the whole weight of a person, in the air, using only your hands. But anyway, underneath them was the safety netting, which was a little more reassuring.
By the way, I should mention special admiration to the Golden Boy, as learning such a difficult discipline, from a young age, is to be applauded.
The following has nothing to do, but while I was not recording, one of the trapeze artists greeted me and I felt so special, hahaha, I would have wanted to have that moment filmed.
After these amazing acts, it's time to say goodbye. Two hours left me like two minutes. I must mention that the farewell was very emotional, as they were in charge of honoring the memory of the founder of the circus, may he rest in peace, and I must mention how beautiful it must be to carry such a family legacy, because the circus is not only entertainment, it is an art as well. I was thinking about how visually attractive many of the acts were, and I find it incredible: I find incredible the amount of work and effort that is required for this, the courage to know that with some of these acts, you risk a lot, but for love you do it; I find it incredible and very beautiful how they not only bring entertainment to people, but also joy.
What I loved the most, was the end, as they not only mentioned how happy they were to be in this city, but also in this country. It made me feel very moved to see them wearing the Vinotinto shirt, and saying that even though they were Mexican, their heart was Venezuelan. Finally, it made me think of all the controversies that exist nowadays because of everyone's country of origin, but we forget that we are all from Latin America, in the end, and I think that makes us brothers, or partners, in a way. It reminded me, after all, that love is worth more than hate, and that it is not worth spending our time with our hearts full of something so harmful, but rather trying to live life happily, day by day, with what we have.
And so, finally, I changed my perception of the circus, because besides having made me laugh and enjoy myself, it made me live a deeply enriching experience.
Nothing more to add... Take care, drink water, and don't forget to smile, you are loved! See you in the next post, bye!
