Leek orchid and pea flower day in Terrey Hills plus a new season fingers orchid : August 19 2026
The sun came out. Did some laundry to use that time. Not organised enough time get out on the bike - not ridden in Sydney since November. All a function of living in a place that is not safe to cycle. Yep - not comfortable after cycling over 50,000 kms across Austrlia. Not a lot of that was done in the cities
Got in the car to drive across to Terrey Hills side of Ku-ring Gai Chase NP. Looking for two specific spring orchids seen on the track in prior years. Start off with a tiny pea flower in the grass
Next up a purple pea flower
Tiny goodenia just opening up - maybe a third the size of a US penny
Hairy mintbush - a new find
First orchid of the day was an opener since last walk - fringed leek orchid
Lots of Sydney boronia all along the track
Next leek orchid right next to tbe track shows will how the flower spike grows up inside the leaf
Prasophyllum brevilabre - 2nd for the day
Next one up shows the stage after pollination. Seed capsule starts to swell and sepals come together
Next of the pea flowers - pale in purple
A few hibbertia types - a clustered flower
Back to pea flowers. Have not spent a lot of time on ID. It is the 2nd largest genus of flowers after orchids - lots to learn
Good test right here - are these two different - shape of pointy bit and colour say yes
Grand old eucalyptus somewhat spread-eagled
Cluster of greenhood rosettes - cannot recall seeing them this far away from the rainforest segment
We have seen these this walk. Go back two peaflowers. Did like the clustering
Decided to walk all the way to Wilkins FT - hoping to find waxlip orchids in the grassy section and sun orchids on the way back.
No luck with either but there was a lot in flowers - a few drumstick flowers just showing
Next of the peaflowers. Close up shows bug action - a tiny grasshopper
With big eyes looking back
Wax flowers aplenty. Sadly the coral heath flower shots were poor - flashes of tiny white
A different hibbertia
Tracking back looking down the slope to the creek. Grand old eucalyptus with a few snake orchid plants in the forks. Classic location
Another cluster of greenhood rosettes different to the last
One flower spike nibbled off
Found one orchid leaf and spike emerging on the way back - maybe a sun orchid or a beared orchid
Did walk offtrack in the rainforest - trim greengood closed up with insect trapped
Found a few open - side on - bunochilus longifolia
Front on
Did find one of the target orchids open in the last 400 steps of an 11k steps walk. When I walk I focus on one side of the track - missed it coming down in a new spot
Front on - white finger orchid - caladenia catenata. First for the season
Walk done. Did some shopping. Picked up a parcel.
Did cook dinner - cottage pie from yesterday bolognese sauce
