New week walk on Blackbutt Creek - there were orchids : August 10 2026
A new week. A new week a long way away from where I want to be. Took the only way I know how to address that - focus on what works - investing and then head out to walk in the sun. Forecast was all wrong - gave a clear morning to walk
Walked the big loop down to Blackbutt Creek the opposite way to normal. Mini mushroom scene

An orchid spotting test on this rainforest rock - can you spy the orchid leaves?
Marked them up. There are half a dozen single leaves. They are thelymitra orchids - leaf only with no sign of the flower spike which will come up as a sheath inside the leaf. The good news is there are more plants than last year
Surprised to find a budding mayfly orchid right here - seen the leaves but never a flower
Flower photo is poor but the detail on the backing bark is clear

Did find a mayfly orchid flowering - acianthus caudatus
One colony of chiloglottis orchids flowering. Was hoping to see more open as there are maybe five colonies below these

Side on. Key to ID is the way the calli make a guitar shape and go all the way to the tip of the labellum
Good news is there are still buds coming for the next few weeks
One more - a deeper burgundy
Found one pixie caps orchid in the same area - acianthus fornicatus
Trim greenhood - pterostylis concinna with its distinctive forked labellum

Good walk. Rain started not long after I got home - good timing.
Did cook dinner - dressed a half chicken to make Thai massaman curry
