Join me in making a beautiful box-pleated skirt for my daughter. I have to admit that, even though I have some sewing knowledge, I initially had no idea how to make this skirt; however, as you know, today's technology means that isn't a problem. I used an app on my phone called Gemini and asked the AI—explaining the project I wanted to undertake—to provide a detailed diagram of all the steps involved. By following them, I finally succeeded, though I did have to make a few adjustments to achieve a better finish with the materials I had on hand.
Acompáñenme a crear una hermosa falda de tablones o tachones para mi hija. Debo confesarles que al inicio, aunque tengo nociones de costura yo no tenía la menor idea de como realizar esta falda, pero ya saben que hoy en día, con la tecnología que tenemos eso no representa un problema. Yo usé una aplicación que tiene mi teléfono que se llama Gemini, y le pedí a la inteligencia artificial (proporcionándole la idea de cual era el proyecto que yo quería realizar) que me diera un diagrama detallado de todo los pasos que yo tenía que seguir para realizar dicho proyecto, y siguiéndolos finalmente lo logré, aunque sí que tuve que hacer algunas adaptaciones para lograr un mejor acabado con lo que tenía.
The measurements provided by the AI are obviously not standard; instead, they are based on the measurements I took of my daughter. First, I bought the fabric—black gabardine. For the cutting process, I used a rectangle measuring 42 cm in length by the full width of the fabric, which was 1.50 meters. I marked the measurements directly onto the fabric using a tape measure and a white colored pencil to draw the exact cutting line.
Las medidas que me proporcionó la IA obviamente no son estándar sino que están basadas en las medidas que yo tomé de mi hija. En primer lugar yo compré la tela, la cuál fue gabardina negra. Para cortar lo hice en base a un rectándolo de 42 cm de largo por el ancho de la tela, el cuál era de 1.50 cm es decir un metro y medio. Para esto yo hice las mediciones sobre la tela usando una cinta métrica y un lápiz de color blanco para dibujar la línea exacta por la cuál debía cortar.
To calculate the pleats—also known as box pleats—since the fabric I was working with was 1.5 meters wide, I had to space out twelve pleats, each twelve centimeters wide; I measured and marked them with a soft pencil, and as a special trick (to avoid mistakes and ensure it turned out right), I folded all the pleats at once and secured the fabric with large pins.
Para calcular las tablas o tablones, también llamados tachones, como la tela con la que estoy trabajando tiene 1 metro y medio tuve que distribuir doce tablas de doce centímetros cada una, fui midiendo y marcando con el lápiz blando, y como truco especial (para no equivocarme y asegurarme de que quedara bien) yo doblé los tablones de una vez y aseguré la tela con alfileres grandes
Afterwards, I sewed a line of stitching—approximately one centimeter from where the waistband would be placed—to further secure the pleats and prevent them from becoming distorted or shifting out of position.
Posteriormente hice una costura al pie de la máquina, es decir a un centímetro aproximadamente de donde debería ir la pretina, esto con el objetivo de asegurar aún más los tachones y evitar que se deformen o se muevan.
Next—even though the diagram generated by the AI didn't include this step—I measured down from the top of the skirt and marked a point ten centimeters down, then sewed a straight line of stitching to that mark. After this step, I recommend pressing the pleats to ensure a better finish on the final product, giving it a more professional look.
Después, y a pesar de que el diagrama que me generó la inteligencia artificial no incluía este paso, yo hice una medición desde la parte superior de la falda hacia abajo y marqué diez centímetros hacia abajo, luego pasé una costura recta hasta la marca, después de este proceso yo recomiendo planchar los tablones para que se vea un mejor acabado en el producto final, de esta manera se verá más profesional.
Now it is time to close the skirt; to do this, I sewed a straight seam of twenty centimeters up to the zipper mark (this will depend on the length of the zipper you have). Upon reaching the mark, I backstitched to secure the seam.
Llegó el momento de cerrar la falda, para esto yo hice una costura recta de veinte centímetros hasta donde tengo la marca del cierre (esto dependerá de la medida del cierre que hayas conseguido) Al llegar a la marca hice un remate para asegurar la costura.
Then came the time to sew in the zipper; the one I used is very discreet—known as an "invisible zipper" (it's very slim). It is best to sew it using a special presser foot designed for this type of zipper, or simply sew it by hand (which I actually find easier).
Luego llegó el momento de coser el cierre, el que usé es uno muy discreto que se llama "cierre escondido" (muy delgado) esto es preferible coserlo usando un prénsatela especial para coser este tipo de cierre o directamente coserlo a mano (creo que es incluso más fácil así)
For the waistband, you measure the waist circumference; in my case, I used my daughter's waist measurement. The reference example shown by the AI had a width of ten centimeters, but I opted for a different size—one and a half centimeters—so I cut a strip matching my daughter's waist circumference (69 centimeters) and measuring approximately three centimeters in width. First, I sewed along the entire circumference of the skirt, and then I folded the fabric over itself by one centimeter.
Para la pretina se mide la circunferencia de la cintura, en mi caso yo usé la circunferencia de la cintura de mi hija, la que me mostraba la IA de referencia tenía una medida de diez centímetros de ancho, sin embargo yo tuve que manejar una medida diferente, la hice de un centímetro y medio, así que corté una tira de la medida de la circunferencia de la cintura de mi hija (69 centímetros) por aproximadamente tres centímetros de ancho. Primero hice una costura a la lo largo de toda la circunferencia de la falda y después doblé la tela sobre sí misma a un centímetro.
And finally, I sewed the hem at approximately one centimeter.
Y por último cosí el ruedo de aproximadamente a un centímetro
And this was the final result: a custom-made pleated or box-pleated skirt. My daughter was thrilled with the outcome, and honestly, so was I. What do you think?
