Hoy, 21 de marzo, se celebra el inicio de la primavera en el hemisferio norte y se regalan flores amarillas, como símbolo de alegría, nuevos comienzos y amor. Aunque en mi país, Venezuela, no tenemos estaciones, adoptamos esa costumbre y creo que se debe a que somos personas detallistas y cualquier excusa nos parece buena para provocar una sonrisa en el rostro de quienes amamos. Esta tarde teníamos una lista de cosas por hacer, entre ellas, llevar a nuestro hijo a comprarle flores amarillas a la chica que le gusta. Él es todo un príncipe y adoro que sea detallista y un caballero.

Today, March 21, marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, and people give yellow flowers as a symbol of joy, new beginnings, and love. Although in my country, Venezuela, we don’t have distinct seasons, we’ve adopted this custom, and I think it’s because we’re thoughtful people—any excuse is a good one to bring a smile to the faces of those we love. This afternoon we had a to-do list, which included taking our son to buy yellow flowers for the girl he likes. He's such a prince, and I love that he's so thoughtful and a true gentleman.

Yo le acompañé a escoger el arreglo floral, no habían muchas opciones y me sorprendió ver a tantas personas comprando este color de flores, porque vivimos en un pueblo pequeño. Entonces quise darle una sorpresa a mi hija y elegí un sencillo arreglo también para ella. Me gusta recordarle lo valiosa que es y que merece todo lo mejor del mundo. Me gusta que se sienta la princesa de su propia historia.

I went with her to pick out the flower arrangement; there weren’t many options, and I was surprised to see so many people buying flowers in that color, since we live in a small town. So I wanted to surprise my daughter and picked out a simple arrangement for her, too. I like to remind her how precious she is and that she deserves the very best in the world. I want her to feel like the princess of her own story.

Creo que no hay mayor satisfacción para una madre que ver en sus hijos esa mirada que irradia felicidad; verlos sanos, felices y convertirse en hombres y mujeres de bien. Pienso que los padres debemos tratar a nuestros hijos, como queremos que el mundo externo los trate. Si les damos indiferencia, maltrato o cualquier otra cosa negativa; ellos permitirán que otros los subestimen y los lastimen. Ellos deben tener presente que son seres humanos valiosos sólo por existir y que no tienen que demostrarle nada a nadie. Claro, de igual forma deben aprender la empatía, la humildad y el respeto, como valores fundamentales.

I believe there is no greater joy for a mother than to see that look of pure happiness in her children’s eyes; to see them healthy, happy, and growing into good men and women. I think that as parents, we must treat our children the way we want the outside world to treat them. If we treat them with indifference, abuse, or anything else negative, they will allow others to underestimate and hurt them. They must remember that they are valuable human beings simply by virtue of existing and that they don’t have to prove anything to anyone. Of course, they must also learn empathy, humility, and respect as fundamental values.

Por fortuna, tanto mi hija, como la encantadora chica que ha cautivado a mi hijo; se sorprendieron gratamente con sus flores amarillas. Ver esas caras de dicha, no tiene precio. Agradezco a Dios por permitírmelo. Sin darnos cuenta el resto de la tarde y parte de noche, giró en torno a celebrar la alegría, los nuevos comienzos y el amor, que nos recuerdan esas flores amarillas. Fue un día hermoso, que quedará grabado en mi memoria.

Fortunately, both my daughter and the lovely girl who has captured my son’s heart were pleasantly surprised by the yellow flowers. Seeing their happy faces was priceless. I thank God for allowing me to experience this. Before we knew it, the rest of the afternoon and part of the evening were spent celebrating the joy, new beginnings, and love that those yellow flowers remind us of. It was a beautiful day that will stay with me forever.
