Recently, my friend Jay got himself a piece of land somewhere in a remote location and it was real bushy. He got in touch with me and told me he was going to turn the place into a farm. Of course he needed help weeding the place out so he asked for mine and I was more than willing to give it to him. We set a date and went out. When we got there, there were no mechanized equipment so we had to use some hand tools; cutlasses and hoes. Jay took the west side of the farm and I went East.
We set out working and ten minutes into the farm I couldn't see Jay anymore. I called out to him and he answered assuring me he was still around. We both worked deep into our portions till we were out of each other's sight. At this point, I was totally consumed in what I was doing I couldn't care less how far away Jay was. Then something happened. Out of the pervading silence and serenity, I heard something that sounded like a baby crying. I froze. “What was that?" I thought. “A baby in the bushes? Weird". I listened if maybe I could hear the baby cry again or just conclude I was going crazy. I heard the cry again and this time, it came with another voice, a laughing voice. By then I believed I was going crazy. Babies? Laughing and crying in the bushes?. I tried not to make a sound so as not to draw the wrong attention. I had begun to wonder for how long I must have been loosing my sanity when from the corner of right eye I saw something big and black run on all fours through the thick bushes. Okay, things had gotten super creepy and at this point I knew I was in for a marathon. I took to my heels not where I was going but one thing was clear, it wasn't along the path I had created. As I ran, this seemingly strange creature followed far behind and I was getting prepared for the worst. I found a huge tree and his behind hoping whatever was now chasing me would eventually loose sight and give up.
I stood there panting and praying within me for help but it was all futile. Then, like lightning, it struck me. Everywhere had become quiet. I peeped from where I was hiding but there was nothing in sight, only bushes. I called out to Jay and this time, he replied but his voice was faint meaning he was a little far off. Finally, Jay was within hearing distance of me and I had begun to see little rays of hope. At least two being chased is better than one. Jay got to where I was and I began telling him that there was a dangerously wild animal in the bushes and it had been chasing me. I told him about the laughing and crying babies and we both agreed there had to be something mysterious about that place. I had finally shared my fears with someone, Jay, and also succeeded in injecting some of it into him. “What kind of animal do you think it is?” he asked. I told him that judging by its size and black color, it was probably a boar or a panther. I hadn't finished talking when we heard the sound of rustling bushes. We held on to each other and expected the worse. The animal got closer real fast and at this point, all I could do was pray to God so He would accept my soul.Just as the creature came out of the bushes, my heart almost gave out. There it was, standing in front of Jay and me, a black goat with its babies. Tuns out we've been hiding from a goat. The baby cries and laughter must have been the bleating of its kids. Jay looked and me with both disappointment and anger in his eyes. He shook his head slowly from left to right and walked away. I had given him the scare of his life. All I could do was heave a sigh of relief and be thankful it was nothing more than a goat.
