There has been a lot of chatter in the most recent Splinterlands Town Halls about revamping tournaments. With this theme in mind I wanted to share my experience with tournaments from the perspective of a newbie.
I haven't come across a simple how-to relating to Splinterlands tournaments. Yes, they are fairly straightforward, but you have to know where to start. If you are just getting started, and are anything like me, the idea of jumping in head first is a bit intimidating. Hopefully sharing my experience, and the ease of the process once you do jump in, will help you take that leap with a bit more confidence.
Thankfully for all of us, @z3ll hosts a weekly tournament aimed at beginners. There are several other series of tournaments for beginners, but this series has captured my attention and DEC 😀
To get started look for and click on the EVENTS icon at the top of the Splinterlands screen. It's the one with the arena, to the right of the BATTLE! icon.
After clicking on the icon you will be greeted with a banner showing the massive amount of prizes that have been, and are yet to be, awarded. If you weren't already excited to start entering tournaments, the sight of potential payouts should get you there.
Below the banner will be a list of upcoming or already entered tournaments. The three columns you will likely be most interested in are WHEN, RULES and ENTRY. WHEN on the far left lets you know when the tournament is starting. For your first tournament I would suggest choosing one that is Anytime. There is nothing wrong, or more complicated, about the other style of tournaments, but for your first one this will give you the peace of mind that you will have time to look around and get comfortable with the system.
The RULES column describes the cards and league limits that will be allowed. ENTRY is the fee to enter the tournament.
Once you have found a tournament that fits your timeframe, suitable ruleset and entry fee budget, click on the VIEW button to see more details. Here you will get a much more detailed view of the rewards, and rulesets. If this looks like a tournament you want to enter, this is also the page where the ENTER button is located.
When the tournament is open head back to the EVENTS page and find the ENTER button for the tournament you have signed up for. Now that the arena is officially open there should be a button in the top right to enter your teams.
At this point it will feel similar to a regular battle, with the major difference being that you may not see the battlefield after making your selections if your opponent hasn't selected their team.
Bonus tip: If you want to get through your team selection process faster, enter your teams closer to the start of the tournament. If you wait until closer to the end you will have to watch the battle play out before entering your next team.
Now you wait and see if your selections were good enough to advance you to the next round. If after 24 hours you are in a high enough position to move onto the next round, you go through the same process again. That's all there is to it!

Here is how I finished in this past weekends tournament
Another reason I choose z3ll's tournament series is that there is also a loyalty system in place if you choose to enter multiple tournaments. If that isn't enough, there are also additional giveaways that take place after the tournament is complete. Lots of opportunities to win!
This tournament series will not make you rich, but of the four I have entered, I have received my entry fee back three of the four times. The one time I didn't I still received half of it back, plus I had the opportunity to win additional cards and loyalty points. On top of that I have gained more confidence and felt more comfortable entering other tournaments.
