Meaning

My goal for my first major light painting project was to depict portraits in an orb as a cage symbol. I wanted to express that everyone lives in their own cage of thoughts and that it is not easy for many people to open up to the point that other opinions are only partially accepted. Especially in the last few years, the division in society has increased significantly because groups (bubbles) are being formed in the social media. These are usually not left and all other groups (bubbles) are avoided or even fought. This is reminiscent of dark times and is anything but tolerant. But now to the implementation of this project.

Mein Ziel für mein erstes größeres Lightpainting-Projekt war es, Portraits in einem Orb als Käfig-Symbol darzustellen. Ich wollte damit ausdrücken, dass jeder Mensch in seinem eigenen Gedankenkäfig lebt und es für viele Menschen nicht leicht ist, sich so weit zu öffnen, dass andere Meinungen auch nur teilweise akzeptiert werden. Gerade in den letzten Jahren hat die Spaltung in der Gesellschaft sehr stark zugenommen, weil in den sogenannten sozialen Medien Gruppen (Blasen) gebildet werden. Diese werden meist nicht verlassen und alle anderen Gruppen (Blasen) gemieden oder sogar bekämpft. Das erinnert an finstere Zeiten und ist alles andere als tolerant. Aber nun zur Umsetzung diese Projektes.

The ORB Cage

First I tried it as a selfie in the absence of available models. For the portrait I use a flash with a snoot and color gels. I drew the orb with the help of a flashlight, colored foil and an attached blade without any additional tools. I left a gap in the ORB through which I could be seen.

Als erstes versuchte ich ein Selfie in Ermangelung an zur Verfügung stehenden Modellen. Für das Portrait benutze ich einen Blitz mit Snoot und Farbfolie. Den Orb malte ich mit Hilfe einer Taschenlampe, Farbfolie und einem aufgestecktem Blade ohne weitere Hilfsmittel. Ich ließ im ORB eine Lücke frei, durch die ich zu sehen war.

The Camera Rotation Cage

For the next picture, I built a frame on which I could turn a defined circle with an RGB flashlight (GloFX). The three-dimensional shape was created by rotating the camera. The portrait was again illuminated by a flash as described above.

Für das nächste Bild baute ich mir ein Gestell auf dem ich mit einer RGB-Taschenlampe (GloFX) einen definierten Kreis drehen konnte. Durch Kamerarotation entstand die dreidimensionale Form. Das Portrait wurde wieder, wie oben beschrieben, durch einen Blitz ausgeleuchtet.

The ORBOMAT Cage

But it still wasn't what I wanted. So I started developing a robot that could paint me an ORB as a cage using an LED. If you want to know more details about the ORBOMAT (robot), write a comment. This is going to be a long story. 😉 In my first attempt I used a small blade, which I put directly onto the LED. This time I painted the portrait (selfie) with a flashlight, color gel and black optic fiber brush. This picture came very close to my imagination.

Es war aber noch nicht das, was ich mir gewünscht hatte. Also begann ich einen Roboter zu entwickeln, der mir einen ORB als Käfig mit Hilfe einer LED malen konnte. Wenn ihr mehr Details über den ORBOMATEN (Roboter) erfahren möchtet, schreibt einen Kommentar. Das wird eine längere Geschichte.😉 Bei meinem ersten Versuch verwendete ich ein kleines Blade, welches ich direkt auf die LED steckte. Das Portrait (Selfie) bemalte ich diesmal mit einer Taschenlampe, Folie und schwarzem Glasfieber. Dieses Bild kam meiner Vorstellung schon sehr nahe.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
