What comes to mind when you think of fall?
What feelings are associated with the season?
As a child growing up in the super hot climate of Central California, fall meant a break from the frequent 100掳 days of summer. It meant playing in piles of leaves in the afternoon and cozy evenings spent crafting surrounded by candles.
It also meant a return to school 馃樋
Despite barely getting passing grades as a kid, I now have positive associations with the "back to school" feeling I get around this time of year.
The days are getting shorter but still there is plenty of light & warmth in the air. Leaves on the deciduous trees are turning the most spectacular colors and then falling to the ground, creating fertility in the soil for the seasons to come.
Fall to me also means a bit of a break from physical work, or at least shorter hours spent hauling rocks & mixing cement. No matter the season, construction on our house must continue. Still, evenings are spent delving into my collection of fantasy books or watching a sci-fi series with my honey <3
At the moment we are currently enjoying the television show Lost (which I think is now at the top of my list of best sci-fi shows of all time and definitely best ensemble cast)
For whatever reason in summer I stray from my love of fantasy and tend to read more non-fiction. Books about herbalism and podcasts about factual(ish) subjects are at the front of my mind. When fall comes around it is back to mythical creatures, faeries, goddess, and more.
Finding books in English about theses subjects is indeed a challenge here in Argentina, so for the rest I use the audio-book app called Storytel to keep up with modern fantasy. Currently I am reading/listening to "The Shepherd's Crown" by Terry Prachett and "Crooked Kingdom" by Leigh Bardugo.
And then there is the series that is so far from modern but still captivates my attention - The Lord of the Rings. Despite first picking up this series years ago, I still haven't finished the Return of the King. I just didn't feel ready for the adventure to end.
I think this fall is the year I will finally read those last chapters. I know this series was written nearly a hundred years ago but, still, no spoilers please!!
