Hello, #qccommunity friends. Trust you are doing well. I welcome you to my blog.

Have you heard about the Onugbu Soup (Bitter Leaf Soup)? That is exactly what I want to introduce to you.

I am from the southeastern part of my country, and we have many traditional dishes such as the African Salad, Nsala Soup (white soup), Oha soup, and the Bitter leaf soup (Ofe Onugbu)

Bitter leaf soup is considered medicinal because of the leaf and the condiments used in making the soup. The soup is mostly prepared during special occasions in the southeastern region of my country. It is a native soup that is served with wheat, fufu, semolina, and Garri. This soup has a rich African heritage and culture. It also serves as a uniting bond, as people always look out for it at events like traditional marriages and weddings.

Growing up, my mum didn’t cook this soup unprepared. She ensures that all the condiments are available, especially the Mangala and Cord stockfish, before daring to cook the soup. It is also one of our favourite foods because of the rich nutrients and its medicinal value.

Additionally, to explain the tradition and history behind this soup, if someone sustains an injury and it is bleeding, applying bitter leaf to the spot stops the bleeding immediately. Again, it is known to have medicinal nutrients that stop stomach upset.

Today, bitter leaf soup can be found in five-star hotels, well prepared and ready to be served. To prepare this soup, you will need the following items:

Bitter leaf (a bunch)
1 kilo of goat/cow meat
1/2 kilo each of Stockfish, Mangala, and Smoked fish
Ede, Ogili, a teaspoonful of salt, and 2cubes of Maggi
A tomato cup of red oil,
A cup of crayfish

To make this soup, boil the meat, stockfish, and fish, and keep. Boil the Ede and pound it. After pounding the Ede, put it in a pot and start cooking. Add red oil and continue cooking. Add the ground crayfish, ogili, Maggi, and the half-cooked meat and stockfish to continue cooking.

After a few minutes, add salt and the bitter leaf to taste. Cook for a few more minutes and serve with pounded yam, semolina, fufu, wheat, or Garri.
