If a giver is not careful, he will turn into a beggar.
People can be so ungrateful. You can help a person for 99 days, but the one day you turn them down is what they will always remember.
It is okay to give, but we must make sure it does not affect us because people do not always have a good memory. Once you stop giving, you are no longer relevant to them.
Somehow, I know this about humans, but it has never stopped me from giving because I am not giving for validation. I give because it makes me happy too.
Back in 2017, I was still a bachelor, and I had this neighbour with four children. Somehow, we started talking, and I would give her children things. They also helped me, especially when it came to sending them on errands. Things were going fine between us.
Fast forward to 2023, I left the house and moved to another location, but we still kept in touch online. Her husband lost his job, so the mother started making demands. School fees, textbooks, and, most commonly, food money, which I often gave.
However, when it came to school fees and textbooks, I chose not to start what I could not finish because if I paid for those things once, they might eventually become entitled to them. I often sent them money for food, though.
Fast forward to 2026. The crypto crash affected me too, and when she sent me a direct message as usual, I told her that things were not going well for me either. I also explained that I was now married and had my own child to take care of.
She just sighed, and that was it.
She did not check up on me afterwards to know how I was surviving.
Only for her to send me a direct message again three weeks later, asking me to help her with any amount.
That message honestly pissed me off. I was like, "I just explained to you what I am going through, and the only message you can send me afterwards is asking me for money?"
I ignored the message and archived our chat. Since then, I have not been responding to her messages.
Then it dawned on me that we are not even family, and it started to look like she had been taking advantage of me all this while because of my giving nature.
I was like, what the hell just happened?
Sometimes, while giving, we must also be careful and make sure the people we are helping do not start taking us for fools.
Give, but do not give to the point where your kindness becomes an obligation to someone else.
