Getting addicted is easy; breaking free is the hard part. Many of the things we become addicted to started as a one-time trial, and before we know it, we are so hooked that we no longer have control over ourselves when it comes to those things.
There are many things humans can become addicted to: gambling, drugs, masturbation, pornography, shopping, social media, video games, and more.
The funny part is that almost everyone has something they are attached to, but many people don't see it as an addiction.
Many people can't go a single day without using their phones. They spend hours playing games, watching reels or movies, or chatting. A day without their phone makes them feel uncomfortable, so they assume it is normal. While phone addiction is generally not as destructive as some other addictions, it can waste valuable time and, in some cases, contribute to eye strain or other health issues.
The addictions that worry me the most are those involving drugs. Drug abuse can seriously damage vital organs and has claimed countless lives.
I once knew a young man who suddenly started using drugs. It wasn't ordinary cigarettes. At the time, the substance he used cost about #4,000. At first, he could afford it, but whenever he didn't take it, he couldn't function normally. Eventually, he ran out of money and began begging people just to feed his addiction. I later stopped visiting that area, so I don't know what became of him. I only know that it would have taken a great deal of intervention for him to break free, if the addiction hadn't already cost him his life.
I was once addicted to gambling too. I spent most of my day gambling, whether it was rolling dice, betting on football matches, or playing games at a PlayStation center. I was so addicted that I would sometimes use my food money to place bets. Even when I wanted to stop, I couldn't because I was constantly surrounded by friends who encouraged it.
What once seemed impossible became much easier the moment I changed my environment.
I left my hometown in 2011, and that was when I finally overcame my gambling addiction.
That experience taught me that one of the best ways to break a bad habit or addiction is to change your environment and, if necessary, the people you spend most of your time with.
Most importantly, you must genuinely want to quit and be willing to put in the effort after distancing yourself from the influences that led you into the habit.
No habit is impossible to overcome. The challenge is identifying and removing whatever keeps pulling you back.
If you are struggling with pornography, avoid the content that triggers the urge. Reducing those triggers can make a big difference.
If you are trying to stop masturbation, addressing pornography first may help if that is what usually leads you into it.
If you are trying to quit drugs, staying away from people who use them, or even changing your environment can be an important step.
If social media is consuming too much of your time, stop buying data lol... Funny but true.. without data you can't access the internet...
Breaking an addiction is difficult, I know that from personal experience, but it is not impossible. With determination, the right environment, and consistent effort, you can take back control of your life.
