Hello to all hive users 馃鉂わ笍馃檹
Hope you all are healthy and doing great in your life馃檪
You have likely heard many people say, "I am really addicted to this." Among the people you have met or those around you, many surely struggle with some form of addiction. These addictions often begin with seemingly minor habits; initially, we might think, "It will resolve itself," "I can control it," or "What harm could a little bit possibly do?" In reality, however, these are the early stages of addiction, and often, we don't even realize when the habit has escalated to a point where breaking free becomes incredibly difficult. At my previous workplace, there was an employee addicted to smoking鈥攕o much so that he would smoke more than two packs a day. Whenever I saw him, he would have either a cigarette or a cup of tea in his mouth, and he would spend his entire day alternating between the two. This is a common addiction; no matter what else they are doing, people often cannot bring themselves to skip a smoke, frequently feeling a strong craving to light up at short intervals.

If we look at the origins of most addictions, the substance or activity involved often started as a very minor part of a person's life. For instance, many people struggling with alcohol addiction initially drank only occasionally and in small quantities. People often turn to such things to relieve stress; however, there are times in life when one faces persistent stress, leading many to rely on substances鈥攕uch as alcohol, cigarettes, or other items鈥攖hat can eventually become addictive. You may have noticed individuals who are quite lonely, perhaps lacking a friend to help alleviate their isolation; they often turn to social media to fill this void, yet social media can be so addictive that breaking free from it becomes extremely difficult.
In all the examples we have looked at鈥攚hether involving cigarettes, alcohol, or social media鈥攁 key observation is that they all began with a simple choice. For instance, when someone felt stressed, they might have turned to alcohol or cigarettes; yet, they could have chosen a different path, as there are many ways to relieve stress鈥攎ethods that might require a bit of thought or effort, but are certainly viable alternatives. Instead, the person chose alcohol. Similarly, someone experiencing loneliness could read good books, improve their skills, or engage in various other activities, yet they often opt for social media. Therefore, it is fair to say that all addictions originate from a choice.
Although many people today undergo therapy and take various measures to overcome addiction, self-control is the most important factor of all.
Overcoming an addiction is extremely challenging; while many people manage to make a start, their resolve often wavers over time, leading them to give up. Consistency is the most crucial factor in breaking an addiction鈥攕pecifically, consistency in the new habit you adopt to replace the old one. It is a fact that to break an addiction, you often need to cultivate a positive habit in its place; only then can you successfully overcome the original addiction. However, self-control plays a vital role in this process. If a person attempts to quit a habit solely because someone else told them to鈥攚ithout genuinely wanting to give it up鈥攖he effort is unlikely to succeed. Unless the individual truly desires the change and commits to it wholeheartedly, they will not be able to break free from the addiction.
