The older you get, the more lessons life teaches you. I learnt a lot of lessons this year, and I would love others to learn from them. Maybe they will be able to avoid finding themselves in the kind of situation I found myself in earlier this year.
Make sure your bucket is full before trying to fill others' buckets
This might sound like being selfish, but it is only those who have found themselves in a tough position that will understand.
When you have it, people will gather around you, asking for help. Even people who can manage on their own will come because they believe they can get more from you and add it to what they already have.
If you are the type of person who does not like to see others in trouble, you will end up spending money meant for investment on catering for other people's problems. Then, when life hits you, those people you feel cannot survive without you will definitely survive. They will be fine, and they still will not give you a dime. They will only wait for you to get back up so they can continue to leech off you lol.
A family man is a desperate man
I hate asking for help. When I am in trouble, I go into quiet mode rather than disturbing people with my problems. When things become good again, then people will be like, "Where have you been?" Not knowing I just finished fighting one of the toughest battles alone lol.
This year tested me. I asked for help, and I did not even hesitate to do so because it was no longer about me. Family must survive, and they cannot bear pain like I can.
One good thing about it was that two people turned up for me. It is indeed in times of trouble that you know those who genuinely are yours and those who just stick around because of what you can offer.
I am just so glad the two people who helped are people I really know will help if they are in the position to do so. Likewise, I will do the same for them.
Two friends are indeed better than 100 fake friendships.
The fact that I hate being indebted to people is one of the reasons I dislike asking for help, but then, I could not help it. These two have entered that list of people I can never finish paying their debt to. It is not just about money, but I appreciate their kindness and loyalty.
Expect the unexpected
Honestly, whatever happened this year did not meet me unaware. I had already started counting the days before it happened because I knew it was going to happen. I just did not have the power to stop the disaster.
But I learnt another lesson aside from expecting the unexpected: always be prepared for anything.
My preparation helped me because I would have been in a very bad position right now.
I am building again. It is going to take time, but I know this is not the end.
Just that this time around, it will be different.
