We cannot choose the family we come from, but we can choose the kind of family we leave behind. And that is going to be my legacy.
I love my parents. Both my father and mother loved me dearly, just as they loved their other children, and they tried their best to groom us. But even with that, both of my parents made a very big mistake that affected their children.
It all happened before I was born, so I did not know the real details. I only pieced everything together from what I heard from my siblings and from them. In the end, I did not know who to blame between the two of them because I knew I did not have the full story. But something definitely went wrong with the decision they made, and it affected their children.
The main thing I have taken from all of this is that I have learned from their mistakes, and I will not repeat them.
The first legacy I will be leaving behind is making sure my children do not have to pay for my mistakes and wrongdoings. And in doing that, I know I have to tread carefully so I do not make mistakes that will affect their future.
The first thing I have to make sure of is that I never get married to more than one woman.
Our fathers enjoyed their youth and life, married more than one wife, and had many children. But what they did not always understand is that there can be competition between wives, which can sometimes lead to one wife harming the children of another. And sometimes, it is too late before the father realizes the consequences of his decisions and regrets them.
So I will make sure I stick to one wife or no wife. I want my children to have a soft life without problems from another family created by me.
Secondly, I want to raise my children in a way that makes them support one another, but none of them should have to rely on another to survive. They will all be groomed to be independent and have what it takes to take care of themselves without depending on one another for survival.
I am literally saying that I am taking my family out of poverty, and my generation will be rich.
I am ready to sacrifice my life for that. I will do the work and teach them the way to become independent in life.
When one person is rich in a family, the family can still be poor, especially if that one rich person is not selfish, because everyone else may keep depending on them until they eventually drag them down.
But when everyone is doing well financially, the family will only get richer.
That is the kind of legacy I want to build.
