WHAT LEGACY DO YOU WANT TO LEAVE BEHIND

“A good name, they say, is better than riches.” Meanwhile, legacy is defined as something one leaves behind and is remembered for when the person is gone. It can be in the form of wealth, impact, values, footprints, character, or awards.

Legacy gives continuity to the living; it leaves a roadmap and pathway to follow. It is a blueprint. Something an individual is known for. Now the question is: do we have a bad legacy and a good legacy? Yes, we do. Some are remembered for their good deeds and positive legacy. Others are known for their bad and negative legacy.
For example, in the political space, especially in my country of origin, we know a few notable politicians, philanthropists, pastors, professors, and even civil servants such as Dr. Stella Adadevoh. This very good woman sacrificed her life treating Ebola patients during the outbreak. That legacy remains ever green in my country of origin.
Now, for me, my legacy is to impact people’s lives positively, showing kindness and empathy when needed. Supporting financially in programs and situations. I try to leave people better than I met them and assist the youth in discovering their talents and potential.
Legacy isn’t about amassing wealth but about providing support and building structures for continuity in families, society, churches, and the nation at large. Building character and changing lives and conditions through training and impartations that can transform and reposition people for a better version of themselves.
Presently, to build and leave a good legacy, I belong to a group that manages the teens building at my local church. We support them academically, participate in in-house training and development, and also in counselling. I am also engaged in activities through a WhatsApp group to support others in securing jobs through open opportunities around us. This is because I believe in teaching people how to fish rather than giving them fish all the time.
Additionally, I have learnt from past failures, built with resilience, and loved to lead by example. That way, my story will be the book they read and hence the convincing power rather than persuasion.

In the end, my legacy will be embedded in people directly, not through the material things I left behind because those things may fade or even get exhausted, but my legacy will continue to impact lives and rewrite people’s stories from generation to generation.
