Shadow Hunters SMASh Contest - Round #447 Finding some shadows on the Institute campus [Eng/Esp]
Happy Saturday, fellow shadow-hunting enthusiasts! I hope you’re having a radiant day that aids in your quest for shadows. I headed out this Saturday morning eager to hunt for some, and although I took advantage of the brilliant sunshine, I didn't manage to find anything interesting—or perhaps there was something there, but my mind wasn't open enough, or my perspective sharp enough, to spot a good shadow. I wanted to go out later, but by then it was too late; the sky had clouded over so much that casting a shadow was no longer possible. It’s now raining heavily in the streets of my city, so I decided to create this post featuring the shadows I hunted down yesterday while at the new research institute where I’ve been working for the past three weeks.
I had to go up there for two reasons. The first was to advise on two undergraduate theses—work I’ve had to bring home to continue evaluating. The second reason was an invitation from a professor teaching the Biosafety course alongside me; she invited me to visit the microbiology center. It is one of the most important facilities and is located deep within the hillside, almost bordering the green spaces of the campus. You see, in addition to the Research Institute, a new university—the University of Science—opened there late last year. So, I arrived at the institute just as noon was approaching; the sun was at its peak, allowing me to capture these shadows cast by the trees over the bus stop.
Then we climbed a long, truly grueling hill; under the midday sun, the ascent was a real physical challenge. Along the way, however, there were several hibiscus bushes—beautiful, certainly—but I was truly interested in the shade they cast against the sunlight. The contrast was striking, and I didn't want to pass up that wonderful shade, which looked like a lattice of shadows formed by leaves, flowers, and short, crisscrossing, fused branches, creating a sort of fractal pattern on the sidewalk. The highlight came when we finally reached the laboratory entrance, waiting to go through the required biosafety protocols. There was a row of bushes there, but one stood out from the rest because it cast shade on both the pavement and the grass; that duality caught my eye. Like the previous one, the shadow was formed by irregularly shaped leaves and branches, but its edges had a serrated or jagged look. I chose this shadow for this week's SMASH contest round #447 because of the way it spreads from the base of the bush, trying to cover as much space as possible; only when you look closely at the leaf details along the edges do you realize just how sharp the captured image is. It was undoubtedly my favorite shadow of the entire trip across campus.
And that’s how my walk around the institute campus ended, friends. I was lucky, too; after visiting the lab and chatting with the lab manager, the afternoon turned heavily overcast, leaving almost no shadows to photograph. So, I made the most of that moment, and I hope you enjoyed it. See you next week with another shadow to hunt. Cheers!

Saludos!
